Stop New Unregulated Geothermal! Keep Hawaii Clean and Green!

Are you a friend or resident of Big Island, Hawaii?  Please help us keep big industry away from our delicate ecosystem.

Please see the 7 minute video at http://www.powerinparadise.com/actions

Everyone who lives in Puna, on the Big Island of Hawaii, is in danger of losing their quiet rural lifestyle, land values and healthy environment.  Plans are being made for many heavy industries to move in to a populated area with a unique landscape, featuring naturally heated warm pools, lush jungle and steam vents.

HELCO power company is moving forward on new geothermal development before the public is allowed to have meetings and input into the planning process.

This community has yet to see adequate emergency procedures, health and safety regulations for the existing geothermal plant.   There has been repeated venting of toxic geothermal gases, toxic waste dumps, poor environmental monitoring, control and reporting.   We have seen lax oversight and disregard for residents’ repeated requests to local and state governments to investigate their concerns.

This is a populated area full of people living on sustainable farms and homesteads.  We depend on tourism for much of our economy.  Some geothermal projects are proposed up the hill from the beautiful beach park and natural hot pools at Pohoiki, the only safe ocean access in Puna.  Other projects are close to homes and schools.

If an industry moves in near us, we lose our investments in land and property values, in exchange for a few dangerous jobs, and a legacy of poisoned water and air.

It is doubtful whether geothermal can be safely done anywhere in Hawaii, because of our small, populated land area and unstable geology, and Puna is the worst possible place for it.

This will be an ongoing petition for anyone who wants to see this area preserved, and will be delivered to various officials as needed.

We the undersigned ask you not to go forward on any further geothermal development in Hawaii until adequate and effective health, safety, emergency and compensatory procedures, guidelines and regulations are in place and are agreed by a majority of the community to be functional.
