Save Embleton Village First School from Closure

  • by: Georgina Armstrong

Northumberland County Council have proposed the closure of Vincent Edwards School, Embleton. This school has been the cornerstone of our rural community since 1688. It is vital for our local children and the survival of our village.
Please help us show that village communities need their schools.

Embleton is one of the last sustainable villages on the Northumberland coast. Many families in neighbouring villages have been priced out of their homes by wealthy pensioners and second homeowners.

Embleton is different- young families are moving into our village and we have a vibrant, living community.

Embleton school is small, but offers excellent standards of education.
Through partnerships with other local schools, Embleton can provide pupils with a broad & balanced curriculum in a truly unique location.

Embleton school is vital to the wider community and the local economy. It provides a lifeline for low-income parents to educate their children in the context of their own community.

Vincent Edwards school is at the heart of our sustainable community - our village will die if our school closes.

Please sign now to tell the Chair of the Northumberland Education Cabinet, Robert Arckless, that Vincent Edwards School Embleton should stay open

Dear Mr Arckless,

Embleton is one of the last sustainable villages left on the Northumberland coast. Many families in neighbouring villages have been priced out of their homes by wealthy pensioners and second homeowners.

Embleton is different - we have a growing stock of social housing and a good school.

Consequently, young families are moving into our village and we have a vibrant, living community that is actually expanding.

Embleton school is small, but offers excellent standards of education. Through partnerships with other local schools, Embleton can provide pupils with a broad & balanced primary curriculum in a truly unique location.

The education board has shown that it is happy to keep other small schools in our area open as primary schools, one with as few as 26 pupils on its roll. All we ask is that Embleton is given the same consideration.

Embleton school is vital to the wider community and the local economy. It provides a lifeline for low-income parents to educate their children in the context of their own community.

The alternative school proposed for our children is wholly inappropriate and is not viable or sustainable in the long term. It is on an isolated site with no faciltiies nearby. It has no public transport links and its location means that every single pupil must be transported by motor vehicle. This will burden the tax payer with a huge transportation bill and is contrary to the council's very own SMOT policy and carbon reduction commitments.

We therefore ask you to change the education board's proposal to close Embleton School, and allow Vincent Edwards to remain open as a viable & successful primary school.

Yours sincerely,
