Italian Government: don’t let the mafia take over the earthquake rebuild contracts

The terrible earthquake that happened a few weeks ago in the Italian region of Abruzzo has been devastating: it has killed nearly 300 people, thousands have become homeless and the architectural heritage of some of the most beautiful villages in central Italy has been reduced to rubble.

It’s very difficult to predict an earthquake of these characteristics, but it’s possible to do more than you think against the forces of nature: some villages of the region, like Norcia, had a lot of earthquake-proof buildings, and they didn’t have to regret any fatality. Therefore, it’s very important to ensure now that the affected villages will be rebuilt with all the guarantees. But in Italy there is an unexpected risk: the mafia often infiltrate into lucrative construction contracts like these to try to take advantage and maximize profits. This risk has been recently highlighted by the Italian anti-mafia chief: in this moment there is a clear risk of infiltration of criminal organizations in these contracts, as it already happened in the 80s after an earthquake in Naples.

We can’t leave the reconstruction of the region in hands of the mafia: the Italian Government must directly and actively supervise the work to ensure that all the villages are rebuilt with the proper anti-seismic safety measures in order to prevent a tragedy like this happening again.

Sign now my petition and help me to avoid the mafia infiltrating the reconstruction works of the Italian towns of Arquata, Norcia, Amatrice, Accumoli, Castelsantangelo sul Nera and Pescara del Tronto.

Italian Government:

Please, supervise the reconstruction works to ensure that all the villages of Abruzzo region are rebuilt with the proper anti-seismic safety measures in order to prevent a tragedy like this happening again, and avoid the mafia infiltrating the reconstruction works.
