Letter of Support for Film Curator Sally Berger

Sally Berger was fired after thirty-years of tireless championing for international cinema from The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). This shocking act by MoMA came on the heels of their apology for Ms. Berger pulling a film out of the line-up in the Doc Fortnight film festival program, as reported by The New York Times on June 10, 2016.

Regardless of whether it is right or wrong to disinvite a film, particularly one that comes with a threat of retaliation from North Korea, it is certainly not good cause for terminating one's life-long career at an institution. Nor does it reflect well of MoMA to allow a representative of their staff to speak poorly of someone's integrity that has contributed so much good for their museum, as was insinuated by Rajendra Roy in The New York Times article. Sally's position and reputation should be restored. By giving our letters of support on behalf of Sally Berger, we urge MoMA to do just that.

Dear Mr. Lowry and Mr. Roy,

I am writing to express our deep dismay and outrage over the firing of Sally Berger. While we may not know all the details around your reasoning, we do know is that Sally has been a brilliant curator and tireless champion of the best in international cinema. She is largely responsible for MoMA's reputation as the citadel of cinema exhibition programs, her dedication and integrity are unquestioned, and her loss is an immeasurable blow to the film community throughout the world.

We feel strongly that Sally's punishment is way disproportionate to her alleged crime, and we urge you to restore her stellar reputation and rehire her as soon as possible.

Sincerely,

Let us hope that a positive change will take place.

In gratitude,
