Senator Sonnenberg: Bring Rain Barrel Legislation to a Floor Vote!

  • by: S E Smith
  • recipient: State Senator Jerry Sonnenberg of Colorado, the Colorado Senate Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Energy Committee

Colorado is the only state in the union that doesn't allow residents to collect rainwater for gardening and other outdoor uses. HB16-1005 would lift that restriction, allowing Colorado residents to conserve water and relieve the strain on residential water services. It's the right thing to do for the environment, and it's the right thing to do for Colorado.

Dear Senator Sonnenberg and other members of the Senate Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Energy Committee,

Colorado is a beautiful state filled with majestic views and ample precious natural resources that need to be protected now and for future generations. The state's ability to balance the water needs of agriculture, industry, residential use, and the environment requires a fine balancing act, and HB16-1005 would help relieve the pressure on the state's water supply by allowing residents to collect up to 110 gallons of rainwater harvested from their roofs.

The limitations on the bill ensure that its provisions cannot be abused, and research indicates that rainwater collection does not have downstream impacts. Followup after the bill is implemented can confirm these findings and allow officials to monitor water supplies accordingly.

By bringing this bill to a floor vote, you will allow the entire senate to weigh in on an issue that is of concern to many Colorado residents, and you'll bring the state's legislation in line with that of every other state in the union. Please release this bill from committee!
