Give our Veterans a chance!

Over 120,000 veteran's are homeless in the United States, this petition is to decrease that number and give hope to those who served. Open hire for veteran's in the police force will not only take our hero's off the streets, but hopefully will also decrease the number of deaths caused by police. By taking away money from the unnecessary expensive military equipment police departments receive and putting it instead in training programs and counseling, not only will we be helping take veterans off the streets and into homes, we will be improving the effectiveness of the police force.
There are over 1.1 million persons employed by law enforcement agencies, that is well over the amount of veterans in need of a job. By requiring all current and future officers to go through a vivid mental and health evaluations we can evict those whom can not take the pressures on on duty police from the departments and put in understanding, thoughtful, and well-trained peoples. The veterans who chose not to under go the pressures of field work required for the job should be hired as dispatchers and office clerks for the police departments. Our veteran's deserve to come home and live the 'American Dream' that they have so bravely fought for.
All branches of the U.S. military are facing the greatest downsizing of personnel since the post-World War II era. The Military Times recently reported that the Army alone is proposing to cut 80,000 soldiers from its ranks in the next 48 months. All these downsized veterans are being cast out into the civilian world to look for work. Many of them will seek an easy fit into police work. But they are competing for a scarce few police jobs with thousands of fellow veterans and many more thousands of unemployed or underemployed recent university, college, and high school graduates. So how does the recently discharged veteran get a step up on the competition? Most agency recruiters want someone with sound decision-making skills on the streets as a police officer. But if you compare the decision-making responsibility that is required of a 19- to 20-year-old serving in Iraq or Afghan with the decisions being made by a college student, the contrast is extreme. The soldier has led a squad from point A to point B and had to decide the safest way to get there. The college student has had to complete a class assignment in time to attend a frat party on Friday night. This is why I believe our veterans should be given the chance to replace those who have any type of criminal background and are to 'frightened for their lives' to do their jobs correctly.
