Save SAWA Santorini Animal Welfare Association from closure which is iminent.

Santorini's government is trying to close the Santorini Animal Welfare Association (SAWA) animal sanctuary, which is home to a hundred or more rescued dogs/puppies and donkeys, and to turn the animals back on the street where they will be shot, poisoned or killed by other means.

The local government has been using dirty tactics, even bulldozing the road which leads to the sanctuary, to try and stop them getting food and water to these poor animals.

38 dogs are there simply waiting for their flights to leave the island as they have been adopted in Germany to start new lives. There are also many dogs that have grown up in the shelter, so they are not street wise and if turned out onto the streets will be unable to fend for themselves.

Please help save SAWA from closure so that they may carry on rescuing and saving these animals and offering them a refuge where they are safe, fed and watered.

For the attention of the Mayor of Santorini - Mr Anastasios Zorzos.

Please find attached a petition created a few weeks ago with over 25,000 signatures from people all over world in support of SAWA and against its closure and against returning the dogs back to the street where they will ultimately die.

There has been a huge outpouring of support from every corner of the world for this rescue centre and I urge you to reconsider closing it.

Update #18 years ago
We visited SAWA a week or so ago (took us 3 hours to find sanctuary as government made SAWA remove all signs). Please please keep sharing, the sanctuary is the only ray of hope these poor dogs have for a safer better life, there is, as far as I know no other rescue centre on this island.
