HELP SAVE THE WHALES AND REEFS OF SALT CAY

Target:
The Developers of the Large Marina and Development in Salt Cay, Turks and Caicos
Sponsored by:
Salt Cay is a small island,  located in the Turks and Caicos Islands.  It is on the migratory path of the Atlantic Humpback Whales.  These whales can be seen breeching and playing with their young just off the island.  The Humpback whale is listed as VULNERABLE in the Turks and Caicos Islands. In addition to the whales, the Spotted Eagle Ray, Sea Turtles, Elk Horn and Stag Horn Corals, surrounding the reef,  are listed on the endangered species list.

A development company has recently announced its'  plans to CONTROL up to 80% of the land mass on this tiny (2.5 square miles) island.  These plans include among other things: an 18 hole golf course and resort, large private estates, new residential areas, condominiums, shops, hotels, and a new MARINA with a proposed 100 foot wide channel to be cut into the middle of the island.

This marina is to be situated in the Historical Salt Salinas. These salt salinas are a designated protected area HA-32 by the Turks and Caicos National Trust (1989).  At one time, Salt Cay was one of the worlds'largest producer of Salt, and these Salinas bear witness to that history.

The proposed entrance to this marina, will cut through the only road going north to south,  potentially damaging and killing the corals, and fish habitat.  The proposed channel will create initial, and potentially on-going, silting over the surrounding reefs,  possibly damaging even more coral and fish habitat.    To add and/or increase boat traffic, will just compound this problem for the whales in this area!

As stewards of this earth, we must give voice to the whales and the ocean.  The knowing (potentially)degradation of the marine animals and reefs, must be stopped.  Please sign the petition below and give voice to your concern regarding the proposed development on the migratory path of the Humpback whales.  Perhaps with our signatures we may be able to affect the futures of the whales and the oceans for generations to come.

i've travled to salt cay twice. it's warm and simple and charming. if an outside development takes place there, i will not go back. local development might be delightful, but not another golf course club med disneyland. thanks, but no.

Will everything beautiful in our world continue to be destroyed until our children have nothing left to inspire awe?

A magical place and magnificent beings that need all our protection! Why destroy yet another place and jeopardize the survival of a species for luxurious convenience and business interests that benefit a handful? Are humans truly that pitiful, arrogant, and unimaginative?

I have taken several trips to swim with the whales and witnessed their beauty first hand. Please SAVE the Turks and Caicos from overdevelopment and one of the few prestine areas left for these animals.

It is a terrible shame to damage a marine habitat and migration channel such as the one surrounding Salt Cay, particularly for presumably unnecessary development. And besides the whales and marine species, Salt Cay should be celebrated as a historic place of great importance in the modern world, and open for the whole world to see, not bulldozed and turned into a playground for the wealthy.

Whales are extraordinary animals. I have seen a presentation on TV on how they are one of the smartest animals in the entire world. The fact that the oceans are being polluted and not just killing whales, but all different sea animals is devastating and wrong. Norway and Japan continue to illegally hunt whales and it must be stopped.

i have seen these whales and they are absolutely amazing. I would like people in generations to come to have the chance to see these animals like i have. this wont happen if people keep killing them off.

Who do we think we are? We are the most selfish of all species on Earth. We think we can just kill innocent animals for no other reason, than because we want something for ourselves. In nature animals kill other animals for food, never killing more than what they need. They not only feed themselves but scavengers as well. However, we make a sport out of it. Now, we want to help kill off something so beautiful, smart, and something that could be gone from our world, all for some marina.

Don't these developers have anything better to do with their time & money than find the few pieces of paradise we have left in this world, and turn it into garbage?

Rarity usually makes something special, something to be cherished and protected. There are so many fewer whales now than before mechanized whaling, far fewer than golfcourses, far fewer than marinas or hotels. Whales take nothing from us but we must be wise and generous enough to give them the tiny portions of the world they require.

We ought to be stewards of the earth, overdevelopment is threatening the habitat of too many animal species. Why do we need another tourist resort? Why not build a research and conservation center instead?

People are becoming too greedy and selfish. Without the animals, we will all eventually die. Why do we have to take so much away from them when we already have so much. It is time to grow up people.

From Bob Gascoine, As a long time friend of Salt Cay, I am very pleased to see this website and that there are other ex-pats and hopefully local residents who see the distructive nature of such a mega development and the cultural impact that this major development will cause. Salt Cay people have endured many years of peacefull subsistance and can (if left unpressured by politics or local bullies) choose a more sustainable and culturaly harmonious type of development that would - in future years, make them proud to host annual homecomings' for Bahamian relatives and friends. The current Salt Cay residents are the custodians of their Island, their herritage and now control the future lifestyle of their children. Hopefully there is an opportunity for mittigation on the issues ...Bob Gascoine

I visited Salt Cay for the first time this year and was amazed by the pristine surroundings. A project like this will ruin the charm and appeal of the island. There are enough resorts and marinas already and not enough pristine beaches. Leave Mother Nature alone.
