PROTECT the wolves; they ARE useful

  • by: Francis van Staa
  • recipient: Kelly Hornaday, Acting Chief : ESA Department of US Fisheries & Wildlife Service

    • Wolves are a signature creature of true wilderness: Top Level Predators. No wilderness exists without Apex Predators!

    • They are enigmatic, mysterious and inspiring creatures, much maligned by many people on irrational grounds.

    • Wolves detest & kill coyotes every chance they get; coyotes are considered pests almost universally

    • Wolves do *not* hunt & kill cattle. Claims by farmers for compensation on those grounds are false

    • Sheep, the only domestic animal to occasionally fall prey, *can* be adequately protected, *if* one so chooses.

    • Deer, Elk & Wild Boar will multiply without Apex Predators. result: damage to crop cultures and more collisions with cars. Swedish figures are chilling.

    • Beaver, when no longer hunted by wolves will flood valleys, causing forests to die. This alone will cost millions of dollars to society.

    • There are only 4000 or so in the lower 48 States of the USA. Why de-list a species of which there are so FEW? I say they are still Endangerd!

Dear Mrs. Hornaday,

In our opinion wolves should not be delisted as proposed per Rule FWS–HQ–ES–2013–0073

The proposed Rule does not take into account "costs" and "benefits" but is based "solely on scientific and commercial(!) information" which seems very contradictory!

All life, be it plant, animal or human should have value, other than monetary, yet that’s all that seems to count; the money. We can “calculate” the value of an old solitary oak tree or a black rhino in the wild. However, looking beyond that, seeing that tree as a minute piece of the all-encompassing puzzle named Earth, more often than not we fail to do!

Wolves – like all creatures – are an integral part of the ecology. Take away too many stones from a foundation and that building comes tumbling down, take away the top level predators and your ecology will change.
