Expand Protections for Scott Islands

  • by: Animal Advocates

The marine area surrounding the Scott Islands off the coast of British Columbia has a vital ocean environment where millions of seabirds breed and nest every year. A National Wildlife Area is being designed, but the boundries do not protect a significant portion of the marine area used for foraging and has not been included in the proposed boundary for the National Wildlife Area.

While 10% would be protected, the unprotected area will pose great risk to the critical ecosystem with no changes to industrial scale activities such as commercial and recreational fisheries, and shipping lanes. These activities cannot continue without limits throughout the National Wildlife Area.

Please tell the environmental ministries to include at least 30% no-take reserves and the exclusion of industrial uses and developments, as is the case in all Marine Protected Areas.
