Sanctuary Taos

Randy Parmer, Chief of Police
400 Camino del Placita
Town of Taos, New Mexico

Dear Chief Parmer:

As citizens of Taos we are extremely concerned with president-elect Trump’s vow to mass deport Mexican immigrants. We feel strongly that Taos needs to declare itself a sanctuary city.

In the near future, the potential for a poorly administered and dangerous attempt to fulfill this unrealistic policy will pose serious setback to the progress and diversity of Taos that you have so correctly praised.

As we are sure you are aware, our state capitol Santa Fe has been a sanctuary city since 1999. There is no evidence that this has had negative consequences to its people or economy. In fact, the city has thrived during this period.

We believe the negative impact on police morale-- should the force be called upon to enforce this draconian policy-- would be considerable. The effect on public morale would be even worse.
We as a nation need to fix an immigration system that is clearly broken. We all understand that unregulated immigration is an issue to be addressed. But the failure of local, state, and federal legislative bodies should not be borne by our towns or cities.

We all personally know immigrants who find themselves in a perilous position. They are our friends, family, and neighbors. The coming policies will only breed distrust and resentment in our community. We cannot allow this. America is supposed to be safe harbor!

Our belief in the rule of law, and our admiration for those who devote their lives to it, rests on our understanding that we are all equal under that law.

We respectfully request a meeting with you to discuss how we can work together with our Mayor and Town Council to establish Taos as a sanctuary city.

Sincerely,
