Slash Spending on Nuclear Weapons

The United States government plans to spend $600 Billion on nuclear weapon systems over the next 10 years. That is money we could better spend on improving education, fixing our crumbling infrastructure, promoting renewable energy, subsidizing public transit, and so on. Why do we need more nuclear weapon systems when the Cold War is over 20 years in the past? There are far too many nuclear weapons in the world right now.

The United States spends as much on defense as the next 15 countries combined, and more than eight times as much as China. Meanwhile, our bridges are crumbling, our roads are filled with potholes, our power grid is vulnerable, the working poor cannot keep up with all their expenses, and veterans are sleeping in cardboard boxes. If you cancel this program, you can put that $600 Billion to far better use: fixing bridges and roads (i.e., providing jobs), improving schools, preventing Social Security from going bankrupt, and so much more.

We don't need more nuclear weapons - we need fewer. We need to focus on this country's real problems before it falls apart.

We the undersigned ask that you cancel the upcoming nuclear weapon systems program, or at least curtail it sharply. The United States already spends as much on defense as the next fifteen countries combined, and more than eight times as much as China - while schools scramble for funds, roads and bridges crumble, working poor try to eke out a living on rock-bottom wages, and veterans sleep on park benches. We need a lot less defense spending, not more - and we need to focus on this country's real problems, such as crumbling infrastructure and cash-strapped schools.
