Disband the highways agency

The highways agency has, of late, taken to closing major trunk roads for up to nine hours at a time overnight. Major thoroughfares such as the A1, M1, A14, M6 and the A43 are often closed overnight for most of the year. Diversions are very often up to 50 miles long adding excessive amounts of time to journeys. The cost of these added journey times to hauliers is huge with added fuel costs and drivers extra pay, and there is also the cost to the environment as large lorries are diverted through tiny villages causing damage to roads and unnecessary noise to their sleeping inhabitants. I call for the disbanding of the highways agency and appoint an agency that knows how to manage traffic. Overnight contraflow systems work, keeping large vehicles on the roads that they should be on and delays to a minimum.
