Justice for Taisian

This is Taisian Beckstead my best friend of 33 years, she's a mother of 5 beautiful children, a domestic violence survivor and by far the strongest woman I know!!
In March of 2018 her boyfriend who was high on meth at the time began repeatedly punching her head, she tried to defend herself but the only thing within reach was a pillow. The next day she complained about pain in her head where she had been punched multiple times; she didn't have a vehicle she could use, no medical insurance, and nobody to leave her kids with if she went to the doctor; most of all she didn't want to cause trouble or draw attention to herself in fear of being beaten again. Her boyfriend’s mom told her that if she went to the doctor he would get charges and that would only make things worse for her so she didn’t go to the doctor, instead she went to sleep. On March 26th 2018 I had just gotten home from vacation, I called the house to talk to Taisian and was told that she couldn’t be woken up after falling asleep the week before so they called an ambulance and she had to be life-flighted to the university of Utah for emergency brain surgery. I was asked to let them know how she was doing because the hospital wouldn’t give them any information about her since her injuries were caused by an act of domestic violence. I arrived at the hospital shortly after that phone call, the hospital staff couldn’t confirm or deny that she was a patient because she was admitted under an alias for her protection. I gave them personal information about Taisian and myself to prove that we knew each other and that I wasn’t a threat to her safety; because she had listed me as an emergency contact I was able to see her.

I was told by the doctors that when he hit her he injured her brain causing it to slowly hemorrhage. She underwent emergency brain surgery to save her life then suffered multiple subsequent strokes leading to loss of mobility on her left and dominate side, a coma, and finally she was put on life support; every time they would try to turn off the machine she would stop breathing. Just as decisions were being made about how much longer to keep her on the machine?
miraculously she woke up, SHE WOKE UP!!!! She spent weeks in physical therapy learning how to walk and talk again, she had to fight to regain custody of her children who were placed in foster care while she was on life support. She has not only survived that heinous attack that almost left her dead; she has made recovering look easy. She has never once said “I can’t.” or “It’s too hard.” From the moment she woke up from a coma she has fought every single day to do her best and did what needed to be done because she is and has always been a determined, strong willed, beautiful woman who will never give up!!

In May of 2019 Taisian was called into the Farmington 2nd district court by Susan Hunt, the lead prosecutor over the case. Susan told Taisian that she would have to postpone the court date out until September 2019 because she had failed to subpoena the doctors from the University of Utah she also asked how on earth Taisian’s ex-boyfriend and attacker could’ve afforded such a high profile defense attorney?
He had hired Mr. Edward Brass the partner of Kim Cordova. (In December of 2017 Kim was appointed by Governor Gary Herbert as the executive director of the Commission on Criminal and Juvenile Justice.)

It’s now September 2019 and Attn: Susan Hunt calls Taisian into her office once again to proclaim that she is going to drop the charges against the man who brutally attacked and almost killed her.

This amazing determined woman survived 13 years of abuse, an attempt by someone twice her size to take her life, multiple strokes, paralysis, and life support. She survived her children being taken from her and put into states custody with strangers while she was on life support. For over a year now she went to doctor appointments, physical therapy appointments, domestic violence classes, parenting classes, and substance abuse classes. She had her personal life inspected and criticized all while managing to get and keep work, get a reliable vehicle, and most importantly get her kids back with her where they belong!!
I just have one question for Susan Hunt. How can you look into the eyes of a woman like that and say
“I can’t prosecute your attacker, it’s just too hard for me.” ?
