Urge Congress to Fund Equity!!!

  • by: Loron Hays

The nation's most important education law, the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (known in its current version as the No Child Left Behind Act), is FINALLY getting overhauled. Unfortunately, in order to get the bipartisan bill to the floor of the U.S. Senate after SEVEN long years of inactivity, restraint has overshadowed reform.

Currently, the debate on the bill - which does NOT significantly increase Title 1 funding - is expected to be an extended one according to this report from Ed Week. There is still time to reach out to members of Congress and remind them that the law should include helping struggling schools invest in their students.

As if not providing much-needed resources to high-poverty areas throughout the United States wasn't enough to warrant action, the current state of the Every Child Achieves Act (ECAA) also does not require states to act on the identified needs of children.According to a report released by the Association of University Centers on Disabilities, it only provides for the identification of struggling students by each state.

Once again, our children stand in the shadows and do not get the help they desperately need: additional resources and meaningful accountability from our government.

It is up to us to remind Congress of the original mission of this civil rights law: level the playing field for all children in public educations especially those living in poverty. Stand with me today and sign this petition calling for equity in education!

Dear Decision Maker,

As someone who cares about quality education for America's young people, I urge you to strengthen the Elementary and Secondary Education Act as lawmakers debate the reauthorization of this important law.

The current bill does NOT significantly increase Title I funding. It should. Such an increase would help more struggling schools in high-poverty levels invest in their students.

The current version of the Every Child Achieves Act (ECAA) also does not require states to act on the identified needs of children. According to a report released by the Association of University Centers on Disabilities, it only provides for the identification of struggling students by each state.

Once again, our children stand in the shadows and do not get the help they desperately need: additional resources and meaningful accountability from our government.

Update #18 years ago
Right now, the US House and Senate are working to reconcile their versions of America’s bedrock education law. The House has passed awful cuts, and the Senate has approved a re-write of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act that rolls back provisions that help children in poverty, kids with disabilities, and other under-served students. We can still make a difference for kids — please take action on this new petition right now.
