Christian Educators, Having Two Dads Is Not a Crime!

Hope Christian School has rejected a three-year-old for admission because the child has two fathers. In a particularly offensive letter to the dads, the school's administration writes that "Same gender couples are inconsistent with scriptural lifestyle," adding that the school is unfettered by "excessive government interference in religion."

The latter point is up for debate though. It's illegal to discriminate against anyone on the basis of sexual orientation in New Mexico. And what is that law for, if not to protect a three-year-old from the worst ills of homophobia?  It also appears the same school is not averse to accepting $60,000 in federal grants.

Tell Hope Christian School that discriminating against a three year old with gay parents is illegal and that accepting federal funds while teaching homophobia is the height of hypocrisy!

We the undersigned think you should not discriminate against the LGBT community. Your rejection of a three year old on the basis of having same sex parents is morally repulsive.

It is not clear to us that you have behaved within the law, either. New Mexico law specifically prohibits discrimination against anyone on the basis of sexual orientation. The law does not exempt private institutions. Furthermore, your acceptance of federal funding requires you to abide by state and federal education standards.

Please reverse your decision and admit the three year old into your school, and reconsider all your homophobic policies.
