Urge NB Premier to Reinstate Dr Clearly as Chief Medical Officer

  • by: Amelia Meister
  • recipient: NB Premier Brian Gallant and Minister of Health Victor Boudreau

Dr. Eilish Cleary was recently fired as the Chief Medical Officer of health for the province of New Brunswick. It is widely believed that she was dismissed on the grounds of her strong opposition to environmental toxins from the forestry and fracking industries. She is an important voice for the health of the province and the environment there.

By signing today you are sending a message to the province, and the world, that voices standing against damaging environmental and health practices cannot be silenced.

Background

Dr Eilish Cleary has been the Chief Medical Officer of the province of New Brunswick since 2008. She has been a vocal opposer of fracking in the province, citing inadequate information regarding health impacts as a reason to prevent further shale gas expansion in the province.

In November 2015, she was put on leave and ultimately fired. At the time of being put on leave she was studying the effects of the herbicide glyphosate on the health and environment of the province. Dr Cleary has stated that she was dismissed "without cause"

Dr Cleary has wide support across the province for her re-instatement as well as the support of over 20 medical officers of health across the country, who are vouching for her professional and ethical standing in her work.

By signing today, you are helping to support the voice of opposition to environmental destruction and their health effects in the province of New Brunswick.

We, the undersigned, demand that Dr Eilish Cleary be re-instated to her post as Chief Medical Officer of Health in New Brunswick. We believe that, despite your assurances, her dismissal was politically motivated and without just cause.

Dr Cleary has been recently supported by over 20 other medical officers of health across the country, citing that Dr Cleary held high professional standards and that her work was well respected and carried out. Dr Cleary was a strong voice for the human and environmental health in the province and her voice must remain in the province.
