Trump's policies are hurting real people on a national and global stage. This includes the proposed border wall, immigration bans, tariffs on imports from Mexico, and more. On top of all of this, Trump is running a country using a pool of tax dollars that we suspect he rarely, if ever, contributed to.
Protests, petitions, marches, and calling our legislators are important acts of resistance. But maybe it's time we speak the language Republicans know well: money.
Americans, let's pledge to stop paying our federal taxes until Trump releases his tax returns and ends fascist policies!
Pledging not to pay federal taxes (but to keep paying state and local taxes) requires no legal or financial sacrifice at all for years, possibly decades. Hopefully the threat of this is enough to frighten Republicans into ceasing their fascist policies, but if not, here's how this would work, according to TIME: Instead of paying the IRS, "people would compute their federal taxes, file a Form 1040 and write a check to a national escrow account, preferably in a well-established Canadian or British bank that is beyond the reach of the U.S. Justice Department."
In the check’s memo line, people should write, “Funds to be transferred to the IRS as soon as Trump leaves office,” or "when Trump cancels his border wall plans," or "when Trumps proves he paid his taxes," or something to that effect. The escrow officer would transfer the account’s trillions of dollars to the IRS when our human rights are secured.
Is pledging not to pay taxes legal? YES, if no overt act of conspiracy is involved, and the pledge is hypothetical. **This is a hypothetical pledge because it has not been established when or if it would be carried out.**
