HAWTHORN DISTRICT 73 MANDATORY GRANDFATHERING OF SIBLINGS

  • by: Mike Herman
  • recipient: NICK BROWN & THE HAWTHORN DISTRICT 73 SCHOOL BOARD

We are petitioning for Mandatory Grandfathering of ALL Siblings in their currently enrolled schools.

Dual Language is slated to continue to grandfather all current and incoming siblings together and we want to be offered that same right.

We are calling for consistent application of district policy to allow our children to attend school together in the same buildings!!

We understand the importance of keeping neighborhoods together, but it is far more important to keep families together.

You cannot keep neighborhoods together by dividing the families that reside in those very neighborhoods.

THERE IS NO REASON WHY OUR CHILDREN SHOULD BE PREVENTED FROM OR DENIED THE EXPERIENCE OF ATTENDING GRADE SCHOOL WITH THEIR SIBLINGS!!

FOR ANY OF YOU WHO HAD SIBLINGS IN K-5 WHILE YOU ATTENDED, WHETHER OLDER OR YOUNGER, THINK ABOUT HOW DIFFERENT YOUR SCHOOL EXPERIENCE WOULD HAVE BEEN HAD THEY BEEN SENT TO ANOTHER SCHOOL.

FAMILIES SHOULD NOT BE SPLIT UP UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES!!

ONCE AGAIN……THERE IS NO REASON WHY OUR CHILDREN SHOULD NOT BE ABLE TO ATTEND THE SAME SCHOOL AS THEIR SIBLINGS WHO ARE CURRENTLY ENROLLED.

Please sign the petition if you agree.

Thank You!!

There is no reason why our children should not be able to attend the same school as their siblings who are currently enrolled.

If a family is forced to switch their currently enrolled 3rd and 4th graders to another school so that the family can remain together, then we feel that if that new school no longer fits the schedules of the working parents of that family, then the school should be liable for the cost of all of the after school care for those families.

Families that do not have the income to support the extra costs of after school care should be given special consideration in regards to which schools they are placed.

Families of children with special needs should also be given special consideration.

BELOW ARE SOME MORE POINTS THAT HAVE BEEN OFFERED TO ALL OF US. THE WERE CONTRIBUTED TO THIS PETITION BY JUST A FEW OF THE PEOPLE WHO ARE BEING NEGATIVELY AFFECTED BY THIS COMICAL DISPLAY OF EFFORT IN REORGANIZING OUR DISTRICT..........

NICK BROWN and THE BOARD are moving the largest neighborhood on the south side of Vernon Hills into the smallest school in the DISTRICT!

ASPEN is already over capacity by 100 students, per Nick Brown.

By moving Deerpath into ASPEN & separating siblings, a real fear for some parents now is that the Deerpath residents that are impacted by this will not be able to opt their older child(ren) out of SOUTH and send them to ASPEN to join the younger child(ren).

This means that working parents will be forced to provide childcare for their split children & non working parents will now sit in carlines from 1:30 to 3:10 every day.

Who on the board can justify this?!?!?!

There are 308 kids from Deerpath currently enrolled at SOUTH, by the numbers Deerpath represents the largest number of students at south school,

Why is deerpath being moved if the goal is to disrupt as few students as possible.

We will have largest number of students moved than any other school.

Keeping neighborhoods together by dividing families...THAT MAKES ZERO SENSE!!

Many parents work schedules accommodate both children at 1 school (South) until 2:55 pm. So for those parents no after school care is needed with both kids at South.

Even if your lucky enough to have a 2 parent household....if both parents are working, and there is no free bus service or after school care how are we supposed to be in two places at once??? Many of our work schedule will not allow for a 2:10 pick up time, and many of us have worked hard at just making sure we could handle South's release time.

Lets be real here people.....Grandfathering of siblings at choice schools is supposed to be null & void????? REALLY?!?!?!

There is still one choice school in our district.  DUAL LANGUAGE still exists and hasn't been mentioned for a reason....Its still an option!!!

I'm sorry but you can't pick & choose where to apply a district wide policy.

If curriculum at Dual Language is changing and it is only an option for ESL families, then same grandfathering applies.......

Next years K-2 students need to go their boundary appointed schools....  EVEN DUAL LANGUAGE

Again, they can't pick & choose to apply policy to work only for their benefit.  They can't take away grandfathering our children while still having it in effect at Dual Language.  If all current students & siblings and all incoming K's are allowed to stay at The School of Dual Language, then the same rules need to apply to all other schools.

Deerpath has no representation on board.  There is belief that some options have been made just to accomodate board members for their neighborhoods, even though it does not fit the criteria.

Option 3 was modified to accomodate needs of a board member that resides in Centennial Crossing.

Deerpath (largest subdivision on south side) is ALREADY housed in south.         Why is that not being recognized?

308 Deerpath students at south. That is half the ENTIRE population of hawthorn club subdivision.....yet in both options they stay at South.

Board member resides in Hawthorn Club with a child at south with an incoming kindergartener.......hmmmm

If you are not going to grandfather siblings to stay together then please don't take a walking neighborhood & move it to a different school. Two drop off/ pick up times for largest neighborhood plus no bus service?

Will you pay for before and after school care to accommodate 2 or more kids @ 2 different schools with different start and end times?

I would encourage every Board Member & NICK BROWN to actually do their job and observe Aspen & South's carlines to understand the feasibility (or lack there of) of having split families between 2 schools

Shame on you and the board.
