The singular cinematic experience of INLAND EMPIRE passed like a ship in the night. Perhaps David Lynch's most dense and uncompromised work of cinema, it barely got released in theatres, and the official Region 1 DVD release is now out of print. With the advance of streaming media, the sad decline of the Art House movie theatre, and the critical success of Twin Peaks: The Return, perhaps INLAND EMPIRE can find a new audience.
We would like to see a physical re-release of the DVD -- it will be fine just with a re-release because the movie was created in the old DV format which is 480i Standard Definition -- with deluxe packaging. Perhaps a third disk of extras, including the documentaries Lynch(One) and David Lynch: The Art Life could be added to the package.
A new BD full box set of all of David Lynch's films is being released in Region B by Studio Canal towards the end of 2019. The country of origin is Germany, but it will be available all over Europe.
This would be a tremendous opportunity for the Criterion Collection to put out a rarely seen film that is the closest thing to David Lynch's pure vision than he ever reached before or since. The Criterion Collection is our target because it's the best option for Region 1 and/or Region A. They have always treated Lynch's work with the utmost respect.
Yes, we want to see a limited theatrical release, but the physical media and streaming re-release would be the more important route to getting this back before North American eyeballs.
