Justice for Rumana Monzur

This petition is in support of our friend Rumana Monzur, who has recently survived a violent attack by her husband. The incident is reported to have been sparked by her aspirations to continue her graduate studies in Canada.  The petition is aimed at maintaining public pressure in support for Rumana's rights to justice, education and to live with freedom from violence.

Your Excellency,

We the undersigned, wish to express our deepest concerns regarding a violent attack against Ms. Rumana Monzur in Dhaka on 5 June 2011.  She is a graduate student at the Department of Political Science at the University of British Columbia (UBC) and had left for Bangladesh to be with her family for the summer.

We understand that Ms. Monzur has survived brutal violence exacted by her husband Mr. Hassan Sayeed. The incident, reportedly sparked by Ms. Monzur's aspirations to continue further graduate studies, has left her severely injured and without eyesight.
This news has come as a tremendous shock to Rumana's colleagues and friends who had expected to see her in September upon her return.

The kind of violence endured by Ms. Monzur is by no means a unique problem faced by one country and we stand with you in addressing this malignancy in our societies.

We also extend our firm solidarity with Ms. Monzur's friends, colleagues and supporters in Vancouver and Bangladesh, and echo the sentiments of UBC President Stephen Toope in urging collective action to  protect the fundamental human right of all women to pursue education.

In this regard, we seek your Excellency's assistance in conveying to your government and the relevant law enforcement authorities in Bangladesh, our considerable distress at the brutality levied upon Ms. Monzur, and our desire to see justice served in this case.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.
