Stop Using Opossums as New Year's Entertainment

Brasstown, North Carolina has a New Year's Eve tradition of dropping a opossum at midnight, instead of a ball, as thousands of residents watch.

The wild opossum is captured days before, and kept in a cage, and loaded into a small plexiglass box high in the air before being lowered at midnight. The opossum can see through the bottom of the box as it is being dropped amid fireworks, neon and flashing lights from cameras, blaring music, crowds cheering, tuba solos, church choirs signing and blasts from black powder muskets- as shown here by CBS News:

After traumatizing the shy, nocturnal opossum for days, it is released back to the wild when the residents of Brasstown are finished using it for amusement and entertainment.

We ask the Clay Logan, the man behind this Brasstown ritual, to stop this unnecessary and cruel form of entertainment on New Year's Eve.
