North American Wetlands Conservation Act

Ducks Unlimited needs your help! The North American Wetlands Conservation Act (NAWCA) conserves North America's waterfowl, fish and wildlife resources while producing a variety of environmental and economic benefits. Its success is driven by partnerships involving federal, state and local governments; nonprofit organizations like DU and community groups. Every federal dollar provided by NAWCA must be matched by at least one dollar from non-federal sources. Because the program is so effective, NAWCA funds are usually doubled or tripled at the local level. More than $1 billion in federal grants has been allocated for NAWCA projects – a figure that has leveraged an additional $3 billion from matching and non-matching funds.

Currently, Congressional dear colleague letters are being circulated in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. We ask that you contact your Representative and Senators and urge them to support NAWCA funding, either by signing on to these letters or by including the NAWCA program in their appropriations requests for FY2018.

NAWCA is a highly competitive, grant-based conservation program and has conserved more than 33.4 million acres since 1989. Last year, the program was appropriated at $35.145 million by Congress. Funding for this program is important and that’s why we ask that you contact your elected officials to ask for their continued support of NAWCA funding, so that we can continue to cultivate success for wetlands conservation on the ground.
