STOP ELEPHANT SLAUGHTER FOR MEAT IN NORTH EAST INDIA

THERE ARE SPORADIC REPORTS OF WILD ELEPHANTS BEING HUNTED FOR MEAT FROM THE NORTH EAST INDIAN STATES OF ARUNACHAL PRADESH AND ASSAM. SOME TRIBAL COMMUNITIES HAVE DEVELOPED A LIKING FOR THE MEAT AFTER HAVING TASTED ELEPHANTS GUNNED DOWN BY IVORY POACHERS.

THE SITUATION HAS WORSENED WITH INCREASING REPORTS OF WILD ELEPHANTS BEING GUNNED DOWN IN THE VAST WILDERNESS OF ARUNACHAL PRADESH AND THE KARBI HILLS OF ASSAM.

THIS PHOTOGRAPH FROM TARASO VILLAGE IN ARUNACHAL PRADESH SHOWS VILLAGERS HACKING UP AN ELEPHANT IN THE MIDDLE OF A HIGHWAY. IT IS NOT CLEAR HOW THE ELEPHANT DIED. THIS INCIDENT REPORTEDLY TOOK PLACE TWO MONTHS BACK, BUT THE PHOTOS HAVE EMERGED NOW AS EVIDENCE THAT ELEPHANT MEAT IS BEING CONSUMED BY TRIBESMEN. ASK INDIA TO STOP THIS ILLEGAL PRACTICE AND PROTECT THE GENTLE GIANTS FROM SLAUGHTER.

The Honorable Prime Minister of India,

The elephant is revered in India, yet in the northeast of the country some tribesmen are illegally killing elephants for their meat. Sporadic reports emerge from Arunachal Pradesh and the Karbi hills of Assam about some groups having developed a fondness for elephant meat. Other reports regarding the clandestine sale of elephant meat in urban centres of Arunachal Pradesh have also surfaced in recent times.

Please act now to stop this illegal activity and ensure protection for the gentle giants. What would be India without its elephants?

Thank you.
