Vermont - Ensure Tougher Laws & Penalties to Protect All Animals Statewide

  • by: Sue Lee

Unless more is done to make an impact on society and the humans throughout Vermont, animals will continue to fall victim to cruelty, abuse, neglect and abandonment.  Throughout the state, charges can vary drastically for crimes against animals. You can read more on animal cruelty crimes, charges and penalties existent at http://www.humanesociety.org/news/press_releases/2010/06/bushway_cruelty_060410.html?referrer=https://search.yahoo.com/,  and  http://www.apainc.org/wp-content/uploads/Vermont-Animal-Cruelty-Summary.pdf, plus nationwide charges at http://www.straypetadvocacy.org/PDF/AnimalCrueltyLaws.pdf.

Protection for animals throughout Vermont appear to be lax and not effective in making an impact against animal cruelty crimes.  My proposal is that any and all crimes of animal abuse, cruelty and neglect or abandonment be classified as a felony with appropriate penalties.  Penalties should include no less than longer jail sentences, higher fees, possible acts of community service hours and also being placed on an animal cruelty registry to be shared nationwide with anyone within the animal industry such as sales, care, breeding and treatment. Such abusers also need to be banned for lifetime of working with, caring for or owning animals for the rest of their lives. There shouldn’t be any second chances because it must be common knowledge that abusing an animal, just like abusing a human is wrong and unjust.  There is never a reason to intentionally harm an animal.

The purpose of this petition is to urge the Vermont State Legislators to implement and strictly enforce much tougher animal cruelty laws, charges and penalties, with all animal crimes being listed as a felony with stiff repercussions.  You can help our efforts by signing and sharing this petition, adding your own thoughts and comments on protecting animals.

Vermont State Legislators – I strongly urge you to take some crucial steps in protecting animals statewide. Animals need humans to be a voice for them and give them the protection they deserve because there is never a reason to harm, abuse and disrespect them.
