Buy a diploma alternative for refugee students

Recently I studied a particular news article with growing joy deep in my heart. It was about an online global education platform that has been launched not too long ago. This learning platform has been created with the purpose of connecting refugee students with university scholarships, resources and other higher education opportunities that would otherwise be unreachable by these students. Instead of looking to buy a diploma, this is a great initiative that provides stepping stones for students displaced by war.

As a resident living in an area where many refugees have settled in along with their children, it warms my heart to discover that this online platform was created to “expand access to high quality education for youths and children around the world.” A brainchild of the Catalyst Trust for Universal Education organization, this program eradicates the need to buy a diploma or certificates when refugee youths have grown up and are seeking employment.

With more than 57 million school children and young people within the age of university-going students being displaced by the ravages of war, this platform would hopefully be the answer many are seeking. It is especially timely as the United Nations has released statistics showing only a mere 1 per cent of refugees are attending university compared to the global average of 34 people out of 100. There would be no need to buy a diploma as quality education can then be dispensed to all youths.

Moreover the Platform for Education in Emergencies Response (PEER) acts as an ideal collaboration between the Catalyst Trust and the IIE (Institute of International Education) in New York, will help pave the way with assistance relating to scholarships, resources, e-learning courses as well as translation services. The platform will also connect students with the proper advocacy and support groups, thus putting aside the need to buy a diploma when quality higher education foundation is within reach.

Thus, it is with a hopeful heart that I petition the US Department of Education to endorse and support this initiative. Wars have displayed refugees and made them lose footing in their country, let's not allow refugee students to lose their place in the world where education is the most valuable thing for our future generation.

Thank you.
