The Fish & Wildlife Service has been using inaccurate and misleading numbers to show the world that the nation's bald eagle population is increasing.  The truth is that few people are looking at the actual eagle nests.  Someone behind a desk is stating that the numbers are increasing and that there are more nests every year.  FWS has been adding new nests to their records without removing any old nests that are either down or not being used.  FWS has made no attempt to determine how many eagle nests are actually "active" nests each year.  Instead of actually counting the nests, FWS uses a fabricated number, based on a percentage of reproduction (estimated when the reproduction was at its highest in the year 2000) to estimate how many young are being produced by their estimated number of nests. This leads to artificially high numbers, numbers that cannot be supported by actual counts in the field. Eagle Nature Foundation, Ltd. (ENF) has conducted Annual Winter Eagle Counts for the past 49 years; the numbers from these counts do not confirm an increase in nests or numbers of eagles. In fact, the numbers ENF has collected over the past 49 years show the opposite.

Moreover, the numbers of young being produced have been declining since 2000 and now are on a level with what they were 10 years before the bald eagle was originally placed on the Endangered Species List.

The Bald Eagle should never have been removed from the endangered species list. Please return this bird to the list of protected birds.  The eagle needs more protection from habitat loss now than it ever has due to pressure from developers moving into eagle territory.

Please protect the Bald Eagle with the full protection of the Endangered Species Act today. Thank you for your time and consideration. We are counting on the FWS to do the right thing and protect the American Bald Eagle.
