Dear President Widodo,
Drug trafficking is horrendous. It was a terrible choice to make. Surely she had other options...right?
I'm sure she did. When a young girl is born into extreme poverty, like Mary Jane, there usually are other ways to make money besides running drugs , usually other ways that are even worse- most without consent, illegal, and involving even younger sisters. Mary Jane saw her crime as lesser than many evils, and a way to feed her young siblings and family.
Mary Jane is a young woman without many options. How sad that she considered this mistake one of the best choices available. Killing her will not help the extreme poverty faced by women globally, whereas commuting her sentence will send a message to the rest of the world that Indonesia is firmly in control of their global involvement in the 21st century and not mired in tired and horrific notions from the middle ages.
If Mary Jane lives she might very well become an agent for good, addressing poverty around the world, especially for women. If she is murdered, without a doubt she will not.
Pleas, commute Mary Jane's sentence and the other prisoners that are on the island waiting execution; this will calm the emotion growing in other countries. The eyes of the world are upon you. The human soul is a gift that can be reclaimed ...let her and the other prisonerss reclaim theirs.
