Japan’s supposedly “scientific” whaling industry has been running at a loss for years. It costs Japan 60 million dollars a year to support a practice of no scientific value and not even any economic point.
Rather than banning or even reducing its whaling industry, Japan is fervently trying to boost sales of an increasingly unpopular product. As demand for whale meat decreases, the government has decided to support the obviously commercial whaling operations by loosening regulations, allowing the meat to be sold directly to the public rather than through wholesalers.
It also wants to increase the amount of whale meat supplied in school lunches.
The ethical problems with whaling are well known. On top of this, the oceans have become so polluted that cetaceans now contain dangerous levels of mercury. Japan is putting its own children at risk to prop up a barbaric industry.
Tell the Japanese government to stop artificially supporting whaling in such an immoral way.
We the undersigned ask that you not try to increase demand for whale meat by increasing its provision in school lunches or by allowing sales direct to the public.
The supposedly scientific whaling conducted by Japan attracts international condemnation, costs the country millions of dollars a year and has virtually no scientific value. Moreover, whale meat is becoming dangerously high in toxins such as mercury. It is not a suitable food for schoolchildren.
Rather than try to prop-up a dying industry, we ask that you, at the very least, do not increase the provision of whale meat in school lunches or make it possible to sell whale meat direct to restaurants or the public.
Keep up the great work. Look what you've accomplished!
