BC: Stop Mining Development in Clayoquot Sound

Clayoquot Sound has been the centre of controversy for years now, as logging companies have tried to strip it bare. Now it is facing a new threat.

BC is trying to push through an open-pit copper mine on Catface Mountain in the heart of Clayoquot Sound. The mine would be run by Imperial Metals, the same company who released millions of toxic waste into a river in the interior of BC only two years ago.

This project would put the pristine and protected wilderness at risk as well as the town of Tofino, which is down river from the proposed mine.

Clayoquot Sound is a UNESCO bioreserve region, one of only 18 in the world. The area is lush temperate rainforest and deserves to be protected from threats of mining development.

To Premier Christy Clark,

As someone who cares deeply for the natural environment I am truly troubled by the recent news that Clayoquot Sound's Catface Mountain is slated to have an open-pit copper mine on it.

This is a UNESCO bioreserve region and is unique and precious. It should not be open to development by mining companies.

Not only that, Imperial Metals has a poor environmental track record with its spill at the Mount Polley mine.

This project should be stopped immediately.
