DMM: Retire Bucky, the Elderly Dolphin With Cancer Forced to Carry Tourists on His Back!
Bucky, a 47-year-old dolphin at Australia’s Dolphin Marine Magic, is forced to perform tricks and participate in swim-with-dolphin programs daily despite the fact that he is recovering from cancer. Although Bucky is equivalent in years to an 80-year-old human and has been sick, he is regularly forced to jump through hoops, do flips, give guests “dolphin kisses,” and even carry tourists across the water on his back.
It breaks my heart that such a highly intelligent, sensitive animal has been swimming between two small concrete pools for the past 45 years. It is even more tragic to know that Bucky must continue to work to bring in profits for the park when he has recently suffered from cancer.
Dolphin Marine Magic has received much criticism for its alleged failures to comply with laws to protect animal welfare. In addition, the park drew negative media attention following the death of a baby dolphin named Ji Ling, who passed away as a result of consuming vast amounts of leaves, sticks, and a piece of metal in his tank. Sadly, Bucky continues to live in the same tanks that killed Ji Ling.
Bucky desperately needs your help NOW. Please send an urgent message to Dolphin Marine Magic demanding Bucky’s immediate retirement, and freedom to live the rest of his days in peace with his pod in an accredited sea sanctuary. I am deeply saddened and disturbed that you continue to force elderly dolphin Bucky to perform tricks and participate in swim-with-dolphin programs on a regular basis despite the fact that he is recovering from cancer.
Scientists and animal welfare organizations all over the world agree that captivity and forced participation in the entertainment industry causes dolphins tremendous physical and psychological stress. Considering Bucky’s advanced age and health history, the demands placed upon him are far too intense.
Please prioritize Bucky’s well-being above the profits of Dolphin Marine Magic. I strongly urge you to retire Bucky immediately and give him the freedom to live the rest of his days in peace with his pod in an accredited sea sanctuary. Bucky may not have much time left on this earth. Please allow him to spend his remaining days in a natural environment where he can display behavior natural to his species.
