Hudson Park Children's Greenhouse Inc. Rebuilding greenhouses at Hudson Park

We support the Hudson Park Children's Greenhouse Inc. project to restore or replace the greenhouses at Hudson Park in New Rochelle, New York.

New Rochelle’s municipal Hudson Park overlooks Long Island Sound’s Echo Bay. Two greenhouses, built between 1911 and 1929, supported the City’s parks and beautification programs for decades. Most recent the greenhouses were used for growing plants by senior citizens and students, and children with developmental disabilities. The greenhouses were closed in 2009 due to concerns about utility costs, broken glass and a failing concrete slab floor.   The entire structure is now fenced off to prevent entry.

Our vision is to restore the structure and provide horticulture, ecology, gardening and agriculture education. We are thirty-nine members who are residents or have ties to the community. Our committee President, Millie Radonic-Ilich has guided a successful program to develop and operate Amy’s Greenhouse (http://www.amysgreenhouse.com) at the Barnard School, which is a living memorial to a young woman who lost her life on 9-11. Major components of Amy's Greenhouse were completed with in-kind donations of labor and discounted materials by the same contractor, tradesmen and others who have also agreed to participate in Hudson Park Children’s Greenhouse restoration project.

We are proud to be supported in our efforts by the city of New Rochelle and the local community. We hope you will share our enthusiasm for the restoration or replacement of this historic greenhouse, located in New Rochelle’s first public park which overlooks the Long Island sound and the continued operation of it.
