Governor Phil Bryant of Mississippi recently spoke of a racist incident that happened in Crystal Springs, Mississippi. A black couple wasn't allowed to marry at a church there because of racist bigotry. He said that this "tainted" Mississippi's image and that it was disappointing. This was discrimination and it was good he spoke out against it.
He said that when people want to get married, they should be allowed to get married, and that he wants to make "every opportunity he can" for any couple that wants to.
However, Governor Phil Bryant doesn't think that gay couples should be allowed to get married -- not only that, but he doesn't even consider same-sex couples to be "couples".
According to the 2010 census, Mississippi has over 3,000 same-sex couple households, with 26% of them raising children. Please tell Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant that gay couples should be allowed to marry too!
Dear Governor Phil Bryant,
I am writing to you today because of comments you made concerning marriage in your state. After a church in Mississippi wouldn't allow a couple to marry there because they are black, you responded by saying that it "tainted" Mississippi's image and that it was "disappointing". It was great of you to respond to this in the manner that you did because what happened to that couple was discrimination and wrong.
However, you began to talk about gay couples afterward, saying that not only do you not believe in marriage equality, but that you don't even consider gay couples to be couples.
Mississippi has over 3,000 same-sex couple households according to the 2010 census, with 26% of them raising children. These couples should be allowed to marry too!
Keep up the great work. Look what you've accomplished!
