Preserve Safe & Sane Fireworks in Seaview Ranch

Sign this petition to voice your support for safe and sane fireworks in Seaview Ranch

Summary:

The Seaview Ranch homeowners association has alerted the community they plan to impose fines for the use of safe and sane fireworks within our community. We want to preserve the tradition and right to safe and sane fireworks in our community without penalty. If you appreciate and enjoy this tradition, please help voice our position by signing this petition.

Safe and sane fireworks are legal within the city limits, have been a community tradition for more than 40 years, raise funds that our local non-profits rely on, provide additional funding for patrol, education and hiring of fire fighters and police officers. Never mind that it's the highlight of a patriotic holiday.

Facts:

  • Community non profit organizations run the safe and sane fireworks booths around the city of Watsonville. For some organizations, this is the biggest fundraiser of the year.
  • In 2014 alone, the 25 non profits with permits grossed a total of more than $400,000 and netted about $250,000 during the four-day selling period.
  • The city collects seven percent of sales from safe and sane fireworks, more than $30,000 in 2014.
  • In 2015 33 fireworks citations were issued in the city of Watsonville but only one was related to the safe and sane variety.
  • At approximately 351 units, Seaview Ranch is a sizable community that currently contributes and participates in the tradition.
