End Random Drug Testing of D127 Students

It is the opinion of those who sign this document that the policies of District 127 regarding random drug testing of students is in direct violation of the Fourth Amendment. The idea that American citizens are entitled to their privacy, unless somehow probable cause is indicated, should extend to students who participate in the various public school programs that require random testing. These witch-hunt tactics employed by District 127 force students to sign these rights away in order to further themselves in extracurricular athletic or academic activities. Keep in mind drug testing is not implemented in other schools in Lake County alone, such as Libertyville High School. These random tests often result in completely innocent students being taken out of their class rooms and being detained until they are able to provide a sufficient samples and if they are unable to they reciceve an automatic failure. There have been multiple instances in Grayslake Central of students who were held for multiple periods because they did not need to use the bathroom, only to pass the drug tests. Instances like these show that these tests can have implications on our learning, and isn’t the point of a school the further the education of students? Not to mention the thousands of dollars per year that the tests cost the tax-payers. The students of Grayslake Central appeal to the Board of Education in hopes of showing that student voices do in fact matter, please take into consideration that these policies are unpopular because they should have never have been put into place originally.
