Hearing Aid Coverage for Children in Massachusetts

Target:
State Representative Harold Naughton
Sponsored by:

My daughter Chanelle is 7 years old. She was diagnosed with moderate to severe, bilateral, sensory-neural hearing loss at age 2. I was in total disbelief to find that no insurance companies will cover the cost of hearing aids in Massachusetts, and that all of the state funded programs that help with the cost of the aids are only available to low income families. Insurance should at the very least cover hearing aids for children, as it is an absolute necessity to their education and ultimately, to their ability to be contributing members of society in the future!

Please help us with the passage of House Bill 910, which will mandate insurance companies to cover 80% of the cost of hearing aids. Thank you.

We the undersigned, are asking for your support to pass House bill 910, which will mandate health insurance companies in Massachusetts to cover 80% of the cost of hearing aids.

We believe that insurance companies should at the very least cover the cost of hearing aids in children, as it is an absolute necessity to their development, education, and ultimately, their ability to be contributing members of society in the future.

Thank you so much for your time and consideration on this important issue.

Every child has the right to the best quality of life possible, especially in this day and age where the technology is available for providing devices to help a child hear. In the long run, providing hearing aids, and assisting in the high costs associated with obtaining these state-of-the-art devices will ease not only the child's life, but the families as well. Looking at the big picture, the impact of providing a hearing aid now will inevitably save money in the future for society as a whole when schooling, early intervention, etc. are taken into consideration.

I feel that every child, regardless of income level should have acess to any medical aid necessary-be it mentally or psychically- children are the future of our country-they are "all- our responsibility"-this child needs a hearing aid-the insurance companies should cover this 100%-she, nor any child, should never ever be denied-coverage -granted that the need is legitimate-and i see this as an absolute & legitimate reason-this! "our country" gives illegal aliens benefits-medical-dental-food stamps-drivers licenses! credit cards etc. etc. etc. and yet-when a natural born citizen of the U.S.A. needs help-especially in light of the economy being so terrible-how can anything as important as this childs hearing,be discounted by an Insurance Company-if the big business insurance companies don,t want to pay-and the government gives to illegals-it starts to "reak of discrimination!"charity begins at home!!!!

Every child should be given every opportunity to grow and live a full life regardless of any handicaps. It is our responsibility to them to give them those opportunities as adults and their care takers.

I know of adults that are hard of hearing or deaf and the negative impact it can have on their lives.

I have a deaf child who we raised to adulthood. The expense of the hearing aids along with the expenses of ear molds was considered a hardship for my family. It astounds me at some of the things that are covered and not hearings and molds for children and adults! It is shameful!

Yes!

It is important to me because I am a senior living on a fixed income and I had to spend $3.172.00 for a hearing aid after I became deaf in one ear due to an onset of SSNHL on 1/22/2006 and I lost some hearing in the other ear several months later due to an ototoxic antibiotic for a bad cold.

I am myself HOH. However I was fine until 1/22/2006 and I am past 60. So I can understand what it is for a young child who is HOH and having to go through life as HOH. What we can at least do is make sure hearing aids are covered by our Health Insurance.

I am deeply saddened to hear that our health insurance is not covering these expenses for children. As a special education teacher, I understand how important tools can be for learning. I support this petition because I understand the impact that this must have on Angelina's life.

A child who cannot hear faces immense eduational and communication challenges. As well as the indnividual child, society pays a price when hearing impaired chldren are not enabled to be the best they can be. The barrier of cost should not be allowed to stunt a child's development. If we adults don't advocate for the little ones, what does that say about us?

Children are immensely resourceful. Years ago I knew a child who taught herself to lip read so she could understand her teachers. It was months before her family realized the extent of her hearing impairment. Today children are tested early in life. What's the point of testing if insurance companies don't honor the medical audiological results? What's the point of insurance companies that classify medical recommendations as cosmetic devices?

Hearing aids are as important as glasses. This should be a no brainer.

Not just children, but all people who need hearing aids should receive them.
