Stop the War on Wildlife

Target:
US Goverment
Sponsored by:
Wildlife Services is the only federal program that kills native predators at the request of ranchers and state wildlife management agencies.

Wildlife Services (formerly Animal Damage Control) is a program of the United States Department of Agriculture, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service. Every year, Wildlife Services spends millions of dollars to kill thousands of predators%u2014coyotes, wolves, bears, mountain lions, and many others%u2014as a subsidy for the livestock industry. The animals are shot, poisoned, gassed, snared, and caught in leghold traps. Wildlife Services programs operate on both private and public lands.

Wildlife Services policies and procedures have been questioned almost since the inception of the program. Although livestock damage is a valid concern, Wildlife Services also kills animals for eating flowers and pet food, digging in gardens, frightening people, and other concerns that could easily be addressed by nonviolent methods. And Wildlife Services runs programs to control bird damage, primarily in the eastern U.S. and at airports, as well as programs to remove damaging non-predatory wildlife.

In addition, Wildlife Services wastes millions of taxpayer dollars by spending far more to kill predators than the actual damage those predators cause. Scientific proof that Wildlife Services practices control livestock damage is markedly lacking.

Despite the opposition of environmentalists and a series of scathing advisory reports over the years, Wildlife Services has survived and prospered, primarily as a pet program of the powerful livestock industry. In recent years, Wildlife Services has been branching out to increase its programs to remove wildlife from urban areas and to promote itself to the public and to schools and other organizations.

We the undersigned request an end to the current program that the Wildlife Services has in place to control the predator population.

This program costs taxpayers around $100 million dollars a year which is a lot to spend on a program that is not very effective. In 2007 the vast majority of the 121,524 animals killed were coyotes -- 90,326. But the trapping, poisoning and aerial gunning of the predators also toke an increasing, unintended toll on other creatures, including 511 black bears and 340 endangered gray wolves - not to mention the uncounted deaths of family pets that where trapped and poisoned.

Wildlife Services which is a program of the United States Department of Agriculture, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service repeatedly claims that its methods are "selective", implying that they only remove animals actually causing damage.

However, the reality is that most Wildlife Services methods are nonselective, in the sense that they will also kill many animals apart from the ones actually doing the damage. Coyotes are the predator killed in the greatest number by Wildlife Services - approximately 75,000 to 90,000 coyotes are killed every year by Wildlife Services%u2014vastly more than are reported as problems.

Also in 2006 an audit conducted by the USDA Office of Inspector General found that biological agents and toxins used by Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service to kill wildlife they consider a nuisance are poorly safeguarded. (Wildlife Services is a branch of APHIS.) The audit faulted the agency for: 1) failing to keep accurate inventories of agents or toxins, 2) not restricting access to agents or toxins, and 3) not having complete security plans. Auditors visited 10 of 75 registered entities where agents are kept and found that none of the 10 complied with security regulations.

Please consider opposing this program and replacing it with a program that will be more humane and have less biological impacts on our enviroment. There are currently different programs being used in several states that are testing non-lethal methods of population control and are having great success with them.

Thank you very much for taking time to read this letter and considering stopping the war on Americas wildlife.

Is there any wonder why there are so many "terrorist" who want to save the most vulnerable of all sentient beings? WHO IS THE REAL TERRORIST IN THE WAR AGAINST HARMING INNOCENT CREATURES?

Why can we not just leave the animals alone, they have always took care of control of their population without us. Now it seems like men think they have to do everything... There are far to many things killing our wildlife as well as our domestic animals, because they don't know better either.. Man kind makes me hate them.. I wish some of the dumb bos who,who put out the poison, set the traps had to experience the same dam thing, or how about their kids, how would they like that? They are an embarrassment to the human race. They will suffer damnation for all eternity.

I call on the US Government to stop the so-called Wildlife Services from killing America's beautiful and valuable wild animals, before it is too late. You are behaving like a barbaric failed state instead of a civilized country that aspires to be the leader of the world. PLEASE STOP the appalling cruel snaring, gassing, poisoning, trapping, and shooting of these wonderful animals, which are your natural heritage. Your intentions are misguided at best. Livestock would be better protected by improved security eg barriers and fences. Remember also that often the "farms" and ranches have been placed where the natural home of the wild animals already existed. Man is the intruder. In any case, your methods are vile. I was just thinking only today, we campaign against cruel treatment of animals in countries like China, but there is probably as much cruelty to animals in the USA. This is the kind of thing that makes other countries have a poor opinion of America-- and you are always so surprised when you hear this. I find it very hard to convince Brits and others that the US is a civilized and fair country. You can't hide what you are doing to your own animals-- inflicting the suffering of a painful death on dumb creatures, because they ate when they were hungry -- Don't you? -- or often just because they trashed a flowerbed. Pathetic! Please put your house in order.

Wildlife are an essential, beneficial part of our ecosystem. They contribute to the balance of nature in a positive way whereas subsidized cattle grazing on public lands causes serious environmental damage and degradation. It is scandalous that our tax dollars support a Wildlife Services program that unnecessarily and unjustifiably kills beneficial wildlife in cruel and inhumane ways at the behest of ranchers who profit from virtually free cattle grazing on our public lands.
