Sugar Glider on a branch in private home. So cute!

Legalize Sugar Gliders in Pennsylvania

Target:
Global
Sponsored by:

Please sign the following petition to allow Sugar Gliders legal in Pennsylvania. These animals have been bred in captivity for many years and have NEVER harmed a human being. There are several private ownerships and USDA of these wonderful animals through out Pennsylvania.

The Sugar Glider is a small marsupial native to eastern and northern mainland Australia. It is a small mammal that will grow to be 6.3 - 7.5 inches. with a tail almost as long as the body.

The law in from the game commission states that you can not own, trade, sell or give away a sugar glider in the state of Pennsylvania. If you are found with one they will take it along with giving you a hefty fine.

The Sugar Glider is a popular pet because of its lively and inquisitive nature; with plenty of attention, it bonds well to human companions. They are small and relatively easy to care for. Sugar Gliders bred and kept in captivity behave differently than those in the wild.

Currently, Pennsylvania is one of only 5 States where owning a Sugar Glider is illegal. The other 4 states are California, Alaska, Hawaii, and Massachusetts. I believe it is out of a misunderstanding, rather than good reasoning, as Sugar Gliders do not fall under any of the categories in which they should be banned.

After extensive research I am unsure as to why they are illegal in Pennsylvania. This is a small pet that has never killed anyone unlike the several dogs, that so many people own in the city (bulldogs, pitbulls, rotweilers, dobermens). I can own a dangerous dog capable of killing a child, but I can not own a sugar glider.

There are many established breeders of sugar gliders in the USA and they are strictly regulated by the USDA. There are many books and websites on care and diet. Gliders have been in captivity for many years and well established diets are available. All of the breeders I found across the USA care who and where their gliders go to. They provide starter kits and a wealth of information and an open door policy on questions throughout the gliders lifespan. I see no reason that glider pet ownership should not be allowed in the state. They are small caged animals that provide great companionship. These creatures being no larger than a flying squirrel, but being in the marsupial family are banned for no other reason than that they fall into the marsupial category; which are banned completely as 'all species.'

As far as special care they are no more difficult then any exotic pet, including Chinchillas, which are legal to own. They sometimes need vitamin supplements sprinkled on food. They need for attention the same as chinchillas need attention or they get depressed and fur chew.

I would like to see a law passed that would allow for ownership of Sugar Gliders in the State of Pennsylvania. Sugar gliders can not survive the harsh winters in Pennsylvania so there is no threat to the current wildlife population.

I did some research and found this about PA and Exotic animals so I am not sure what more really should need to be presented to make them legal. I know they were at one time because that is how I first saw them and fell in love with them - in a PA Pet Store... Pennsylvania Category: L Summary of Law: No person may keep exotic wildlife without first receiving a permit from the wildlife commission. Exotic wildlife includes, but is not limited to all bears, coyotes, lions, tigers, leopards, jaguars, cheetahs, cougars, wolves, and any crossbreed of these animals, which have similar characteristics in appearance or features. However, there are no state requirements for a person possessing non-human primates and reptiles. Citation: 34 PA. CONS. STAT. ANN. §2961 and §2963

I live in California and they are illegal here. I'd like to own one but where's the logic in this: Michael Jackson can have monkey's, lion's, giraffe's...almost a whole zoo at his home in California, but I can't have a pet that fits in the palm of my hand in my home? Just doesn't make sense to me. Legalize them for goodness sake! If Pennsylvania legalizes them, maybe California will follow suit. (It's already very carefree here, why not let us have suggies?) Good Luck!

If it is so bad to own one why is it that 45 other states dont think so, PA always think they are above other states or something. PA has its head up its ass about alcohol regulations as well, it just doesnt make any sense

I spent hours researching information on sugar gliders and was so excited about purchasing of couple of them and having them as part of the family until I learned that they were illegal in Pennsylvania. I was really disappointed.

I wanted a Sugar Glider and i did a ton of research and save up all my birthday and christmas money to buy 2 (hate to be alone:) then noticed that PA made them illegal, which i think is dumb because other states have them and they are great pets so i dont see the problem

They are so adorable and could not be any worse than all these people that own pit bulls, animals that have actually killed people.

I've been waiting for suggies to get legalized in Pa for years. It's not fair that loving and caring owners can't own these amazing and cute creatures. LEGAL PLEASE!!!! :-)

I love this little critter. Had one for a week thinking it was legal in Pa. It was a present for my son for Christmas. We fell in love instantly. Unfortuneately, she's gone back to where she came from. Found out I couldn't obtain a permit. We were heartbroken. This little critter is so misunderstood. I also do not understand the reason why it is banned from our state.

PA should legalize gliders for those animals coming from USDA approved breeders. What we don't need is more "puppy farm" type breeders.

Since Sugar Gliders do not fall under any of the categories in which they should be banned from being owned in Pennsylvania, then why ban them? It makes no sense whatsoever. Plus, do people honestly think these animals can cause harm to humans? Based on their size, I personally do not think an animal such as this could be harmful to anything to be honest. They are very cute and seem very easy to take care of. I say we let people in Pennsylvania keep Sugar Gliders as pets.

There is no substantial reason to make sugar gliders illegal. I find that in PA many harmless animals are illegal to own as pets. They need to change this and make them legal to own it's ridiculous half of our pet stores still sell the food for these animals anyways!

As i have not been able to find any substantial reasons for the illegalization of Sugar Gliders in the state of Pennsylvania, i believe that possetion of the exotic animal should be legalized.

These animals should be legal in PA because there is proper food for them in captivity. There is also books and information on the information about them. These animals bond well with humans and can be great companions.

Sugar Gliders are becoming more popular as pets and are more demanding. These animals are extremely smart and loving. Although I have never owned one, my daughter owns two (not in PA) and they bonded rather quickly to her. She purchased her Gliders from a breeder while the Gliders were still young and she just adores them. Gliders should not be homed separately, but as pairs. These wonderful animals should be legal in PA because they bond so well with humans.

We have been wanting to teach the children all about the Sugar Gliders habitat and how they are in captivity. Since they are illegal in PA, we can not teach them. Please legalize them!

PA is missing out on a lot. I moved out of PA because I couldn't own the animals I wanted to without getting in trouble. I urge you to legalize Sugar Gliders or you will end up with less and less people in PA. Sugar Gliders are becoming more and more popular as pets so people are going to naturally want them as pets. They are not all that hard to care for. They pretty much eat what humans eat, except for the pellets, meal worms, crickets, etc.

I had never even known what a Sugar Glider was until I went to my relatives in Ohio. I wasn't aware that they even had this type of animal as a pet until I arrived, but their Sugar Glider greeted me with so much love and affection. I have health problems and am in and out of the hospital. I wanted to see my relatives again before anything happened to me. While there, at my relatives, I never had a health issue, which was odd because I usually get admitted to the hospital once to twice a month. I was prepared to be admitted to the hospital while I was at my relatives for a month in a half, but I never had any problems during that time. I believe the Sugar Glider gave me something to look forward to and helped with my health problems. When I did come home, 3 days later I had to see my family doctor and he couldn't believe how well my health was either. I never ended back in the hospital until I was home for a month. I been in the hospital three times since coming home. I decided I wanted to own a Sugar Glider since my health was better with one around. I searched and found that they are illegal in PA. I have been staying with my relatives in Ohio, been here for almost 4 months and have not been in the hospital since. I am now looking for a place to live in Ohio so I can own a Sugar Glider. If the Sugar Glider is not what is helping my health get better, then I don't know how else to explain it. It's awfully funny when I'm not around the Sugar Glider I get sick and end up in the hospital. When I'm around the Sugar Glider, I am healthy and only need to go to my family doctor for check-ups. Legalize the Sugar Glider so they can help others stay healthy or get healthy again.

Having tuaght environmental education and been involved with a non-profit animal center, it is a shame that Sugar Gliders are not legal to own in PA and CA. They are not considered exotic by the USDA and are legal in 46 states. Georgia made them legal this year as long as the owner has documentation that their sugar glider was obtained from a licensed USDA facility, person or orgnization. So much can be learned from this affectionate animal that bonds so well to humans.

OMG... When I heard Sugar Gliders were illegal in PA I couldn't believe it! These exotic animals should definitely not be illegal. They are so loving and make excellent companions. They have helped people survive longer, due to an illness they had. There are other animals besides cats and dogs that are excellent companions. Please legalize these wonderful animals so others can experience their loved one living a longer life.

God's people in Pennsylvania should definitely be allowed to have ownership of these beautiful creatures. God put these creatures here for all humanity to admire. God did not only put these creatures in the wild so they can remain in the wild. He put wild animals here so that all humanity can admire their beauty and perhaps care for these creatures. I never knew what a Sugar Glider was until I moved from Pennsylvania to Ohio. My family and I met a couple that owned 12 Gliders. We found them facinating, so of course, we asked questions. We done our research, bought books. Once we knew the basics, we purchased 2 Gliders from the couple. You can never know everything, so we still research. My family and I now own 26 Gliders and they are the best creatures that have ever made our life meaningful. Definitely legalize God's creatures.

How can you say "NO" to an exotic animal that needs a home? I have had opportunities to give many Sugar Gliders a loving, caring, forever home, but I couldn't because they are illegal in PA. It was heart breaking when I had to tell the people that offered them to me that I can not have them due to them being illegal in my hometown. Legalize them so that the many Sugar Gliders that don't have homes can have one. Give us humans a break for once. Too many laws when we are soppose to have freedom.
