Please do not ban & profile the Pit Bull in Spokane, WA

Target:
Spokane City Council Members

I am very troubled to learn we have citizens who will stereotype a breed based on the actions of the few.  Have we not learned that we can not condemn the masses based on the deeds of the minority?  We can not and should not profile animals simply because of the breed to which they were born.

Blame the deed, NOT the breed. This sort of dog profiling must be stopped. These animals are caught in the middle of a very vicious circle. On one hand you have those despicable people who raise these animals to be fighters, which mind you could be established in any dog breed based on the cruel and torturous steps necessary to cultivate this in the animals.  On the other hand they are being pre-judged on their temperament simply because they are a pit bull or a pit bull mix which may result in banning and who knows, elimination based on nothing more than what breed they were born.

I am by no means discounting what happened to one of our citizens in Spokane this past April.  The event was horrific and I am truly saddened that this ever happened and it should not be permitted to happen again.  With that said, this is the fault of the pet owners, not the fault of the animals.  As a responsible pet owner we are to be held accountable for our pets, for their welfare, their safety, and the safety of others.  There are leash laws in place, animals should be licensed, and animals should not be on the loose - to prevent injury to themselves and to others.

I ask you to see beyond this media created fear and see this through the eyes of an animal that has been abused, mistreated, and maligned by humans and should not endure further discrimination, only the love and kindness that they deserve just as any of our precious pets and animals.

There is NO proof that this legislation works, and killing, or banning, innocent dogs is NEVER an answer. please educate yourselves as government, and your people before acting barbaric.

Any dog can be dangerous! It's not the bread that's dangerous it's how the owner raises the dog. People don't understand the pitbulls are not naturally mean animals. You have to train a pitbull to kill another animal they don't just do it on their own. Punish the deed not the bread!

MY SON HAS A PIT BULL, BUDDY, WHO IS BY FAR THE SWEETEST, SAFEST DOG I'VE EVER MET. HE WAS WELL TRAINED BY MY SON TO BE OBEDIENT AND NEVER BITE, AND EVEN WHEN HE IS MET WITH AN AGGRESSIVE OTHER DOG, HE WILL TAKE CONTROL OF THE SITUATION BUT NOT HARM THE OTHER ANIMAL. BLAME THE DEED, NOT THE BREED!

I am looking into owning a pit-mix, and am relieved to see that I am currently allowed to do so. It would be a shame to ban a dog that would protect me while home alone, or from potential attackers while on a run or walk.

I have a 4 month Blue nose American Pitbull female. I am original from spokane wa. I sign in to protect the banning or hopefully to prevent the extermination of pitbulls. I am a true believer that it is not the dog to blame for the attacks it is the irresponsible owner of the dog, mistreating to the point of hostle behavior. Its never the dog its the owner who raised him to be the way he is. Please dont ban the pitbulls. Read about the Michael Vicks pitbulls and how they turned out.

Ban stupid people. Don't punish a breed just because some humans lack the sense or ability to properly raise a dog in a good, loving environment. Punish the people that raise the dog to be violent and aggressive; rehabilitate the dogs that need help with socializing.

Please don't blame an animal for the irresponsibility of some owners. My daughter owns a pit bull terrier and she is a sweet obedient dog. A dog of any breed that is mistreated can become dangerous. So please don't condemn the breed.

The only dog I have ever been bitten by was a poddle mix, and the only reason I was bitten was because the dog was abused . I love all dogs but feel that if a dog is abused it will respond differently to people. We need to start punishing the people that make dogs act in these ways. It is never the dogs fault!!!!

I have twin 5 year old girls, and two, 2 year old Pit Bulls. I have lived, and owned Pit Bulls since I was about 3 years old. I would never endanger my family or friends with a vicious attack dog as people like to call them. Everyone who likes to jump on the bandwagon about our dogs should check out the fact before they judge a breed of dog. I mean these people like us owned Pit Bulls Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, General George Patton, Helen Keller just to name a few.

I can understand what pit bulls and their owners go through. My dog is a rottweiler mix and, although her breed is not generally as looked down upon as pit bulls, we have faced discrimination as well. She is perfectly well behaved and yet it's hard to find housing, even in buildings where dogs are allowed, once they find out her breed. Now she has to stay home with my parents while I go away to college because I can not find an affordable way to bring her with me. It is not fair to try to judge how a dog will behave based on their breed. Our hearts go out to the poor dogs of all breeds who are -turned- mean by people. It is not the dog's fault if the human does not raise it properly...the dog is a victim too.

I WORK IN THE ANIMAL FIELD AND THE DOG IS NOT THE PROBLEM YOU SHOULD PROFILE THE THUGS OUT THERE ABUSING AND FIGHTING THESE DOGS. THE PIT IS ACTUALLY CAUGHT IN A CATCH 22 CAUSE IT WANTS TO PLEASE ITS OWNERS SO BAD IT WOULD DO WHATEVER IT THINKS THE OWNER WANTS THEM TO DO. LOOK UP THE STORY OF THE MIRACLE OF MICHAEL VICKS RESCUED PITS ARE ALL FINE, NONE OF THEM WHERE AGGRESSIVE TO PEOPLE OR OTHER ANIMALS, AND ONE HAPPENS TO BE A THERAPY DOG NOW! MICHAEL VICK WAS THE THUG AND ABUSER AND MURDERER OF DOGS, HE IS A FELON AND THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT SHOULD HAPPEN, IT IS NOT THE BREED, BAN ALL OF YOUR THUGS INSTEAD. THIS PICTURE IS THE THERAPY DOG THAT USED TO BE MICHAEL VICKS DOGS AND FIGHTER. HE IS THE CRIMINAL NOT THE DOG. THIS DOG GOES TO HOSPITALS AND NURSING HOMES AND IS ALIVE AND DOING GOD'S WORK NOW, AND MICHAEL VICK CAN ROT IN.......

To Spokane City Council Members, To Ban an entire breed of dog creates an extremely false sense of security in a community. It does not address the bigger issue, which has ALL to do with the "people" who are in gangs and literally force these dogs to become vicious so they can use them for illegal dog fighting, which, as you know is rampant in every city. These people have created a negative impact on what was once a family pet. Look at the dog Petey, in the "Little Rascals", here was a perfect ambassador of what this Breed was and should be. Every city in America would be better off spending Tax Payer's Dollars on apprehending and severely punishing this sector of humans. If we could only euthenize these individuals, we could clean up many other social problems as well, like the war on drugs... Better education in dog ownership is fundamental. Banning an entire breed does not "fix" the problem, it only masks it. With that ban comes the severe death penalty to innocent dogs, this is not only unfair but morally unjust. I personally have witnessed innocent dogs and their families torn apart because of this ban here in Denver and it flat out wrong and needs to end. Please learn from other neighboring States that have had this law repealed. This ban has been repealed because It does NOT work, don't fall into the same horror show as Denver. There are issues with every breed, and every dog should be dealt with seperately and accordingly by the law if it bites, that seems fair, doesn't it Council?
