Since 1980 over 80% of Orangutans have been wiped out all because of western civilisations increasing demand for palm oil. According to experts, we have just 5 years to make a difference to save the orangutans from extinction. They are expected to have vanished from the wild by the year 2012. Orangutans used to live all across east Asia, but now have been restricted to just the small Islands of Borneo and Sumatra in South East Asia. This is mainly due to logging in the rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra, which used to cover vitrually all of both islands. Also, due to an oil called Palm oil, or better known to us as vegetable oil. This oil is found in most of our everyday food products. It is very high in saturated fats, making it one of the most unhealthy oils to use in food. There are many healthier options, such as sunflower and olive oils. The palm oil companies are destroying the rainforests by dangerous methods, usually burning (which often becomes uncontrollable) to make way for plantation where they can grow this crop. These rainforests are disappearing at a rate never seen before on this planet. Plantation owners will show no mercy and the methods of murder are cruel and inhumane, including maiming, severing, burning alive. There are horrific photos here on the internet of the everyday killings made in Borneo and Sumatra of these beautiful cousins of ours. There are more sustainable sources of palm oil, from plantations which can deforest areas only where there is not to be known any groups of endangered animals, like the RSPO (Roundtable On Sustainable Palm Oil). Although this leads to corruption and needs to be made stricter (how about not deforesting atall?) it is a step in the right direction. There is still a chance to make a difference, but the news needs to be spread of what is actually happening. People need to know where their food is coming from and for what costs. Only then will we be able to act together to save the orangutans, an animal so alike humans in many ways.
Please sign this petition to help save the orangutans. Send it on to your friends and family and spread the word of this terrible predicament, and end the secret of the Palm Oil Industry and its effect on the Indonesian and Malaysian Rainforests. If you want to make an even better impact, avoid buying products containing palm (vegetable) oil, and opt for the healthier olive and sunflower oils. You can also encourage food companies and brands to switch to more sustainable oils. For example Walkers switched to sunflower oil from palm oil recently. xxxx

Our closest extant relative is about to succumb to rapacious capitalists for the sake of palm oil. Which is more important to you?

Everyone should boycott products containing palm oil. The Malaysian and Indonesian Governments are ruining their reputation by allowing this to go on as are the companies buying palm oil.

This summer weekend my family went to the Milwaukee Public Zoo. By each animal, there was picture showing if the species was stable, vulnerable, endangered, or critical. The picture said that orangutans were endangered. Right away I wanted to help.

i believe that these beautiful creatures should not be harmed
they mean no harm to you. they are beautiful and do not need to be
killed just to put some fat on people. stop the use of palm oil or their kind will not survive.

Saving the rainforests of Kalimantan and Sumatra is the only chance we have to save the orangutan and thousands of other precious species from extinction. It will also make a huge contribution towards reducing co2 emissions and therefore climate change and global warming. We owe it to future generations.

Orangutans are one of GOD's countless beautiful and important creations. Orangutans are very intelligent and should be protected. If we lose them, they'll never return.
