Save the University of Washington Women Studies Dept Undergradute Computer Lab

Target:
University of Washington Women Studies Dept Faculty

Currently, the University of Washington Women Studies Dept plans to remove the undergraduate computer lab. This room is currently used by students as a meeting place, a place to engage in critical dialog, and a place to complete research and general assignments required for their degree. This plan will effectively remove a valuable resource for students who receive few resources from the department to begin with.

This plan will effectively remove a valuable resource for students who receive few resources from the department to begin with.

The signatures on this petition are meant to complement the letter we previously submitted.
Winston Churchill once said, "We shape our buildings and afterwards they shape us." The proposition to remove our multi-use area was simply decided without ever consulting the students who use it most. This sends a very negative message to current and prospective undergraduates alike about the politics of hegemony within the department. After Spring Quarter 2008, there will literally be no space for feminist undergraduate scholarship at the University of Washington. This is simply unacceptable.
We should have the ability to produce work IN the department, not near or in conjunction with. We would like the undergraduate computer lab to remain accessible for undergraduate students or a suitable replacement to be provided within the department.
Thank you for taking the time to address our concerns.

This center is more than an area for just computer usage. This lab also offers a place for women studies' majors to meet up and have a common area to discuss and to also encourage another means of helping one another out in courses.

Now more than ever, women studies student's need their own study/computer space. If you close this lab you are doing a huge disservice to both the community and anyone interested in women's issues.

I am really disappointed that the only space that the woman studies department has is being taken away. I am also disappointed that the facualty didn't go to the students also. I would really like for this to be reconcidered.

I think that the Women Studies department has limited space for undergraduate students already, and the disappearance of the computer lab would result in limited connection and community building among the Women Studies department.

We need to keep the computer lab! Just found out about our own space for use last quarter! Completely unfair to discard our space without asking, that's a complete power trip! My guess is if the faculty and staff of the women studies department made it known that there is such a resource for women studies undergrads MORE WOULD USE IT! We don't have ANY OTHER space for just women studies, this is it and if it is taken away where are we to go? what are we to do?

I find that lab very useful. Even if I have my laptop, I often need a place to plug it in. I have used the lab for this because there is only one outlet in the hall near the bathrooms. Besides the hall is a tough place to focus. I have also met people in the lab and that is very important. Maybe there would be an increase in the usage of the lab if it wasn't always so locked down? I took me a while to figure out I could get a code to open the door... then to find someone to give me a code.

Please don't take away one of the few resources reserved just for our department.

This lab has been an important resource to me as a WS undergrad. When there has been no other space at the libraries, I have come and found a quiet and useful place in the room. Removing this lab would do a disservice to the undergrads in WS.

The undergraduate Women Studies Lab is the ONLY physical space for women studies students to convene, engage in important dialogue, and work on critical projects and research. I use the lab frequently and it has been essential to my engagement in the women studies department as a whole.

As a graduating senior that has used the Women Studies undergraduate computers and room, I believe that this space would be missed and it would send a negative message to current and potential Women Studies students.

The Women Studies Computer Lab helped me make friendships and connection with other undergraduates at the University of Washington. I has given me a space to converse with and grow with fellow women studies scholars. Please do not remove this space. It is hard for us undergraduates to have a sense of community in this department and this lab has provided it to me in numerous was. The lab is vital and should stay.

Please don't take away the only space that is dedicated to the undergraduates! It is VITAL that we have a space not only for writing papers and completing projects, but also for building a much needed undergrad community.

This is uncalled for and sends a negative message about the importance of undergraduate scholarship within the women studies department.
