Speak out against the Slaughter-Whales need you

April is a dangerous time for whales in Norwegian waters: it marks the start of whaling season. This year, up to 1,286 minke whales will die from
exploding harpoon and rifle wounds. Norway needs to know that this is
unacceptable, NOW.

Norway's own data shows that at least one in five hunted whales suffers a long, agonizing death. Some take over an hour to succumb to their injuries.
Imagine the pain.

A 2009 opinion poll found that the majority of Norwegians agree the suffering inflicted by whaling is unacceptable, and that only 1% of the
population eats whale meat regularly. Despite this, Norway continues to
defy the whaling ban: 2010's kill quota is the highest in 25 years. The
government claims to receive little criticism over whaling. It's time
that changed.

Don't stand by. Speak out against the slaughter. Add your name to our letter to tell Norway's Prime Minister you
demand an end to this cruelty. We will deliver all the signatures just
before Norway joins the International Whaling Commission's annual
meeting in June. We'll use your voice to press the Norwegian government
into reconsidering its whaling policy.

Dear Prime Minister Stoltenberg,

I am extremely disappointed that Norway, a modern and progressive country, continues to allow the cruel, outdated and unnecessary practice of commercial whaling.

Whilst Norway%u2019s brand new Animal Welfare Act commendably strives to protect animals from unacceptable and unnecessary suffering, it seems your government has a blind spot for the welfare of marine mammals such as whales. This year 1,286 minke whales face inhumane slaughter in Norwegian waters. Since inspectors were removed from whaling boats in 2003 it is not known how long these animals suffer for, but previous data suggests that many hundreds will suffer for 2-3 minutes, with an unfortunate few taking over an hour to die from their wounds.

Despite years of research by your government%u2019s experts, no reliably humane way to kill whales at sea has been found. The margins for error are too high, and so is the suffering inflicted.

This suffering is unnecessary %u2013 the industry is failing economically because the demand for whale products is low and declining. A 2009 opinion poll revealed that only 1% of the Norwegian population eats whale meat regularly.

Whilst Norway is one of just three countries defying the international ban on commercial whaling, the rest of the world has realised the benefits of a new sustainable and humane way to interact with whales %u2013 whale watching. This industry, worth some $2.1billion across 119 countries worldwide, offers an opportunity and incentive to value and protect whales.

Whaling is tarnishing Norway%u2019s international reputation as a country which respects its environment and animals. Please look to the future and invest in a policy of promoting watching %u2013 not catching %u2013 whales. Please stop whaling.

Yours sincerely,
