Innocent Palestinians suffer under the Israeli siege - Gaza

Call on Canada's Prime Minister - Gaza Human Rights

Target:
All the free people of Canada
Sponsored by:

During January 2008 two events having similar repercussions yet of starkly different nature occurred. This is a tale of two nations under siege; one by nature and one by man.

In the frigid Canadian north, Nunavut was sieged by a vicious blizzard that cut supplies to the general populous for over a week. During these tumultuous times the Canadian government and people worked vehemently to aid our fellow citizens. Fortunately the blizzard abated and we were able to bring timely relief to the battered north.

At almost the same time a siege of a different nature was unfolding half way across the globe. An Israeli siege was undertaken in Gaza that indiscriminately cut all supplies to an already malnourished nation. The Human Rights Council of the United Nations issued a statement (A/HRC/S-6/L.1) that calls for urgent international action to end grave Israeli violations in occupied Palestinian territory. There were 30 nations in favour, 15 abstentions and only one against this resolution. That one nation was Canada.

I implore my fellow Canadian citizens to remember that indiscriminate punishment is not the way that a democratic and free nation resolves conflict. 1.4 million People are punished for reasons that are unjustifiable under any international law. There is no fuel to run generators in the Gaza strip and as a result hospitals are rendered inoperable. Men, women and children on kidney dialysis machines will die because they simply do not have electricity to keep them operational. This is just one example of the many thousands that suffer and will ultimately die because of this oppression. Is killing by stealth any less of a crime than killing by bullet?

Just as we extend our hands to our fellow citizens in another part of our Country we should be able to do the same across the globe. We are all citizens of the world and as a result should strive for the betterment of humanity as a whole.

This petition is in favour of a peaceful solution to this conflict and against the vote that Canada placed towards this resolution. If you are believer in a just and democratic solution please sign below. This will be sent to the right honourable Stephen Harper, the prime minister of Canada.

We the undersigned are appalled against Canada's vote to support Israel's grave violations in the occupied Palestinian territory.

Indiscriminate punishment is inhumane and should not be supported by a just and democratic nation.

I thank you, the right honourable Stephen Harper, for taking the time to address our concern.

This is inhumane to just sit back and watch, we have the privilege to be a very prosperous country and sometimes at the expense of other countries, we should really be giving back just because WE CAN.

One small petition could easily save lives of thousands of innocent children and people. I ask God to help us succeed with this petition and help our fellow Palestinians live in peace.

We demand action, it is unacceptable that the government of our great nation in Canada chooses to misrepresent its people in an unjust manner. Rest assured that if this type of ignorance continues, from our country's leaders, eventually a better government will replace the current irresponsible one.

I have palestinian friends and I have jewish friends- all I wish to express is that our indiference to the matter is leading to the systematic extermination of the palestinian people- first through land, then freedom of movement, and now economy. Radicalism on both sides is wrong- why must be empathetic, we must care about both sides- and Palestine must not be suffocated anymore.

I believe that this is a very serious issue and that our Canadian government should place some serious consideration on their decision to go against a resolution that can help save people that are in dire need of our government's help and support. We are Canadians, and as such, should be able to offer something more than a nay on a vote that is so important to end, or help end, this conflict in Gaza. So, please, Honourable Stephen Harper, I beg you to reconsider the government's stand in this matter. Thank you for your time.

This siege is inhumane; just as we wouldn't want it imposed on ourselves, we shouldn't help impose it on others.

If Canada really wanted to support peace and stabilities, the only way to do this is not by supporting the oppression of people on one side, but rather by making sure there's fairness to the treatment of people on both sides and encouraging talks between the two sides that lead to fair results for both side. Iam deepley dissapointed at the way Canada has handled this and the way it presented it self in terms of this issue to the international community, I can say that for the first time, Iam embarrassed to be a Canadian.

Is there a price on different people's lives and their blood. I don't think so. Therefore, we should care for these innocent civilians

As a visitor to your beautiful country, I was impressed by the wild grandeur of the land, the cosmopolitan and friendly cities. The personal friends I made, from academics to a factory-worker who sang and befriended wolves. Why do you, then, DEMONISE, a fine and resiliant people? We sre all watching 1.5 MILLION people slowly weaken through lack of water, food, medicine. The sewage system is collapsing, there is no fuel for generators, even hospital ones. There is nothing, save 1.5 million people existing in squalor, but, mostly managing, somehow to hold a family together. And then the bombing raids....Not the primitive rockets, and fireworks, fired usually into illegally 'occupied' land, but massive bombs, dropped by fighter planes or drones. Imagine hearing those at night, with sick malnourished children at home, no food or clean water and then the bombs start falling...And the world turns it's back and pretends it is not happening... How many Israelis have been killed in the last several years by rockets? 17. 17 too many. How many Palestinians have been killed by Israeli air power in the same time? Around 6,500. 6,500 too many. Most are civilians, many are children and babies. I have worked in many countries. I know that if people have access to basic material needs like water, food, simple housing, basic safety and love, education, good work, space for creativity and to grow inwardly as well as outwardly, they will thrive. We ALL need this. Palestinians are demonised more than any other group of people, even including other Arab groups. Do we feel we have to put up with a group of our fellow human beings being treated to endless, lies, humiliations, deprivations, violence, slaughter, in case we are called 'anti-semitic?!!! Rather than 'standing shoulder to shoulder' with people who choose to interpret their religion by calling Palestinians 'insects who ought to be exterminated' [ often far-right'christians'] why not speak to the many Jewish people who deplore what is being done in the name of Zionism. Check out sites such as 'If America knew'. Read Jeff Helper, I. Pappe, Prof. Marc Ellis, Bet'shalam, etc. Look at sites like CAABU which give accurate maps of this fractured land set aside for Palestinians, and which makes the idea of a viable Palestinian state, as it is, impossible. It's the fable of the Emperour's new clothes! And then read Masada2000, 'Daniel Pipes' And the sites on 'an alternatibve view of Islam''christian' sites such as Hagee and David Hatherway, and people who call for WW3, and for Arabs to be exterminated, to 'bring about the 'second coming'. You may vomit! Ask yourself, who lives the mitzvah of Tikkun Olum? I ask myself do I? There was a secret report mentioned in the UK 'Guardian' a few years ago. A report which mentioned rich powerful countries, in times of great global shortage, may choose to enclose behind barriers those who were not rich and powerful, cut them off from open access to an open life and limit their access to water and food. Limiting water and food under gunpoint was done in New Orleans; it is still happening in Gaza RIGHT NOW. As a world we need ask: Should we demonise people, so they can be starved, 'eliminated' from the food chain, from life itself, without anyone caring. Who will be next? Will this happen to me, my children, those I love? Or do we live in the light of the mitzvah of Tikkun Olum? Or the light of the Beatitudes; break out of the limitations and tyranny of 'black-box' thinking, especially in these times of crisis. As Rumi the Moslem Sufi said [paraphrased!]'I looked for G*d, in Synagogue, in Temple, Church and Mosque. He wasn't there. I found Him in the Heart of a wo/man who could love, so deeply, His love shone through the mirror of her heart to all the world and to all peoples'. LOrd have Mercy, on this stony-hearted world and all those broken people who are called 'rejects' by this world. May we may not become subhuman ourselves by turning away from injustice.
