Stop the construction of a dolphinarium in Oludeniz, Turkey

A dolphinarium is being constructed as we speak. Kas Dolphin Park in Turkey has rented a piece of land in Oludeniz, Turkey and is creating a swim-with dolphins / therapy program for tourists. They are aiming to have it ready for the summer season.

We cannot let this happen! Kas Dolphin Park claims that he dolphins will have a break in the winter, when they are kept in sea pens. Still, this is captivity and it is not acceptable to take dolphins from the wild, away from their families, for human entertainment. The whole summer season, these dolphins will be kept in a small tank and will continuously be exposed to human interactions. The dolphins have no choice and nowhere to get away from the endless lines of people wanting to interact with them. These are wild animals and interactions with these animals are not without danger. There are numerous accounts of people getting injured by the dolphins during interactions.

Deniz Tangal, owner of local tourist company Activities and Homes Unlimited, had a look at the construction of the dolphinarium and said the following: This is a dolphin pond, not a pool, it is far too small. How do they propose that the dolphins will live here? This does not sit well with my views of how animals should be kept. They should be respected and not treated like a gimmick.

Turkey has a bad track record when it comes to keeping dolphins in captivity. Four dolphins only died recently. Furthermore, in 2008 12 dolphins were imported into Turkey from the Japanese drive hunts (see The Cove, Oscar Winner!).

Please let Turkey know that this is unacceptable and sign this petition!

It has come to our attention that you constructing a dolphinarium in Oludeniz for a swim-with dolphins and therapy program. We urge you to stop the construction of this facility immediately.

Dolphins are not suitable for a life in captivity. They belong in the wild with their families where the can roam free. No captive situation, whether it is a concrete tank or a sea pen will ever compare to the vast open space that dolphins enjoy in the wild.

We, the undersigned, are potential valuable tourists for your local community, but we will not be visiting the area of Oludeniz or Kas if you continue with this project. We will also be asking our families and friends to do the same and we will be writing to travelling agencies to withdraw trips to your facilities.

The owner of a local tourist company has already expressed serious concerns about the facility your are building in Oludeniz. This is not a viable project and we urge you to abandon the construction of this facility immediately.

Thank you for your time and we trust that you will do what is right for the dolphins!
