We are a small group of local people who practice the Lakota ceremony of the sweat lodge. The City of South Salt Lake has sent a letter to the owner of the house where the sweat lodge is held stating that there can no longer be open fires in the yard to heat the rocks we use in the ceremony. We are hoping that anyone who believes that we as Americans has the right to pray in the way we choose and that we should be allowed to hold ceremony the way it has been done for thousands of years will sign this petition

So long as a religious practice does not violate the rights of others it should be allowed. If the fire does not pose any kind of safety hazard to the surrounding area then I see no reason why it should not be allowed.

There shouldn't be any restrictions that interfere with your religious rights/practices.

Live and let live! As Americans, we are supposed to have the freedom to choose our own spiritual path and practise it the way we each see fit, so long as we are not infringing on someone else's right to choose/practise.

As a member of the LDS Church I am more than surprised that in Utah there would be any restriction on the practice of a person's religion. Unless there is something not being presented i.e. the fire could spread to a neighbor's home or that it creates too much smoke, it is not only un-constitutional to restrict their right to worship but it is definitely against the doctrine of the LDS Church. Our Founder and Prophet, Joseph Smith, stated in one of the Articles of Faith (which encompass the basic beliefs of the Church) "We believe in worshiping almighty God according to the dictates of our own consicience and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may." I believe that says it all. To preserve our own right to worship we must respect the rights of every one of our fellowman to do the same.

Under Federal Law, the Department of Justice, as a branch of the United States Government, has a legal responsibility to protect Native religions, and their spiritual & cultural practices, which includes this purification rite. If this is simply a matter of changing the South Salt Lake Municipal Code to include these open fires, then a special provision should be made. As long as the fires are contained, and cause no harm to others or their property, what is the problem? You would think that a town settled by LDS members would be sensitive to these types of issues!

WE practice the Lakota ceremony of the sweat lodge and are being told by the City of South Salt Lake that we can no longer have fires to heat the rocks that we bring in the lodge and pray with. This ceremony is how we build our contact with our higher power and is a ceremony that has been practiced for thousands of years. What we do is done in a good and kind way and we ask for the support of others who believe that the way to a good life is through prayer and that no matter where you find god the point is that It is found
