United States Submarine Veteran Memorial

United States Submarine Veteran Memorial

Target:
City of Tacoma

We are the United States Submarine Veterans Inc and have felt there is a need to honor the men who made the supreme sacrifice while serving their country in submarines.  United States Submarine Veterans, Inc is a national organization made up of United States Submarine Veterans.  Our main reason for existence is to perpetuate the memory of all the Submarines and Submarine Sailors that have been lost both during times of conflict and during peacetime.  We are working with the United States Naval Station at Keyport, WA to obtain a surplus, non-functioning torpedo that would be mounted on an attractive concrete stand.  We would like to see the City of Tacoma erect a memorial that will honor the 52 submarines lost during WWII, as well as all submarines lost during peacetime.  We have an old inactive torpedo that would be set on a concrete support, with a bronze plaque dedicated to the memory of all lost submarines and their crews.  The location for the memorial has yet to be determined however, we would like to have it installed at the Blue Star Military Memorial at the Narrows Bridge.

This is a very good idea, because people have a tendency to forget when they are not reminded of what has been done for them.

The U.S. Submarine Fleet is this nation's most important line of defense. The men manning these boats put their their lives at risk on a daily basis, every time they go to sea. Recognizing their contributions to preserve your freedom is not asking very much for all the sacrifices they make. It is right and just to honor all the Submariners who gave their lives in serving on submarines.

If it were not for the US Submarines, we would be speaking Japanees West of the Missippippi River and speaking German East of the Missippippi River. GOD BLESS OUR MILITARY MEN AND WOMEN !

The contributions made by the "Silent Service" in the past and the present are a big part of why we're still a free country today. This memorial is much needed and long overdue!
# 50:
5:22 am PDT, Aug 4, Don Steinhagen, Iowa
The Silent Service is a good thing for today's operational submarines still "on station". However for the service provided by these "volunteers" of past patrols has been too silent for too long. Let's recognize these brave souls who went to sea in underwater ships that have preserved our Great Nation's Freedom.

Sounds like A great idea. As an old submariner its about time we are no linger the "Silent Service" and our decised comrads are recognised for their duty and sacrifice. Bill Albright, LCDR, USN, Retired

As a Submarine Veteran, I* believe this is the least we owe to those Brave Shipmates who gave their lives ensuring that the rest of us could sleep soundly at night. Considering that 90+% of the maritime damage done to the enemy was by way of the submarine, I think this is long over due.

There is not enough we can do for our retired or active military. We live free because of their service to this country. This is a small way to show your thanks to the men who gave so much.

A memorial would be an outstanding way to honor the Submarines and Submariners lost while defending our country during WWII and also during peacetime.
# 28:

The Men and Women who died in WW2 are a generation who have given the most but have received the least amount of recognition. It took nearly 60 years to build a memorial in DC and this just isn't enough. We must honor these 52 submarines that won the war in the pacific for us, and this memorial is long overdo. We need to build this memorial for our submariners who are still on patrol and the wives, mothers, fathers, daughter, sons, sisters, and brothers who are still waiting to be reunited with the sailors they love. The Submariner proudly gave his life to protect his country, his freedom, and his wife. The children he left will cry and be sad, but when they grow up they'll always proud of their Dad. They'll grow up and have families and tell their kids why, for freedom and country that why grandfather died. Just remember this when you look up at the sky, he's looking down on you and your his reason why.

The submarine service was, is & always must be, the "Silent Service". Our very lives depend on "stealth"! That required secrecy causes nearly all Americans (who have no involvement with a submariner), to be blissfully ignorant of the very exsistence of our submarine force! We need to do more to recognize the vital service to the defence of our nation that "Silent Service" has always provided. Our Fleet Ballistic Missle submarines have been continuously "on patrol" 24/7 for more than 50 years! Very few Americans realize this fact! I was privlaged to be a small part of that HUGE mission.

Having lived in the Northwest for many years, I believe this memorial is a terrific idea. I too am a submarine veteran from the cold war and am currently involved with establishing a submarine memorial in Phoenix, Arizona. I want to encourage you to lend your support to this project, you will be glad you did. Respectfully Submitted, Tim Moore

As a submariner I take pride in the sacrifices all submariners have made for this great nation of ours. But let us remember those Submariners that are still on "patrol". 52 U.S. subs were lost during WWII, accounting for almost 3500 men. These men should be be forget.
# 14:

Let's honor every one of those submariners with this memorial.
# 13:

I was proud to be stationed aboard submarines and proud to be associated with the men that served on board the boats during WWII. The men that lost their lives should never be forgotten, as they turned the tide of the war that allowed us to gain victory. I fully support this idea to build a memorial to these men.

The Submarine Service has been and always will be our FIRST defense on our coastal waters from on to below the seas. It is about time that they have a memorial to call their own. Just because they are called the "Silent Service" does NOT mean we should be silent in our thanks...pride...love and gratitude to these brave souls who protect us from the seen and unseen.
# 6:
2:47 pm PDT, Aug 2, Joseph Witherspoon, Washington
The Silent Service does not also mean forgotten.
# 5:

I think that it would be a fine way to remember those that have given thier all in the defense of our country. Submarine sailors face danger every time that they submerge and work beneath the surface fleet. We do not know that they are there but they provide a constant defense both here and abroad. The submarine sailors stand ready to deliver harm to those that wish to harm us.

This is a memorial that is long overdue. Robert Klink of Tacoma was lost on board USS Dorado in WWII. His name is not on the memorial plaque for WWII veterans from Pierce County, now in the Blue Star Memorial Park.
