Say No To Palm Oil!

Palm oil is a type of edible vegetable oil that is derived from the palm fruit, grown on the African oil palm tree. Oil palms are originally from Western Africa, but can flourish wherever heat and rainfall are abundant. Today, palm oil is grown throughout Africa, Asia, North America, and South America, with 85% of all palm oil globally produced and exported from Indonesia and Malaysia; but most of the time not using sustainable measures.

The industry is linked to major issues such as deforestation, habitat degradation, climate change, animal cruelty and indigenous rights abuses in the countries where it is produced, as the land and forests must be cleared for the development of the oil palm plantations. According to the World Wildlife Fund, an area the equivalent size of 300 football fields of rainforest is cleared each hour to make way for palm oil production. This large-scale deforestation is pushing many species to extinction, and findings show that if nothing changes species like the orangutan could become extinct in the wild within the next 5-10 years, and Sumatran tigers less than 3 years.

In total, 50 million tons of palm oil is produced annually, supplying over 30% of the world’s vegetable oil production. This single vegetable oil is found in approximately 40-50% of household products in countries such as United States, Canada, Australia and England. Palm oil can be present in a wide variety of products, including: baked goods, confectionery, shampoo, cosmetics, cleaning agents, washing detergents and toothpaste.

As consumers can you try to be aware of the impact of what you buy influences and further drives the need to continue this deforestation and the devastating impacts it has on the natural environment and species living there, not to mention the negative impact on local communities. Vast areas are burned and in the midst of this every growing catastrophy are the ever dwindling species.

thank you for the continuing support regarding this palm oil petition.I am still continuing my fight to make more people aware of the plight of the orang-utans and other animals whose habitats are routinely destroyed. I've written letters to supermarkets asking for responses to why they put palm oil in their own brand products. It's watch this space.please watch what you buy, as a lot of everyday products contain it...and spread the word that PALM is dirty!

Thank you so far for all the signatures! I thinks it's wonderful that so many of you out there really do care. Some news from Greenpeace on this matter. This month, some of the biggest palm oil growers agreed to turn off the bulldozers and put forest destruction on hold. But this doesn't mean it's all over. The fight continues on illegal palm oil production.

Thank you!I'd love to see more if you can share with anyone who cares about environmental and wildlife disaster.Any products you buy, 50% contain uncertified palm. It's questionable on how legit the certificates are, companies are purchasing cheap oil.then buying Greenpalm certificates, and claiming they're sustainable when not. They're stripping forests/burning peatlland, killing orang-utans/wildlife that get in their way to grow this lucrative crop.

Thank you to everyone for signing this petition. I really do appreciate the fact that you have taken time to listen and be involved in this cause, it means so much to me, to realise that there are other people out there that do care what's happening to 'our' planet.

A big thank you to all the signers so far! I really wasn't expecting to get a response as I have tried so hard to educate people I know and it seems a hopeless cause, but one I will keep on fighting for. So thank you for your support!
