African Union: Act to Help Burundi

  • by: Amelia Meister
  • recipient: Idriss Déby, Chairperson of the African Union

Burundi in the midst of a crisis of epic proportions that can only escalate unless some action is taken. Over a quarter million people have fled their homes and their country, seeking refuge in Tanzania, Rwanda, The DRC or Uganda. These countries are not prepared for the influx of people escaping rape, torture and violence from the Burundi government.

As the refugee crisis escalates it is imperative that the African Union take action to Burundi and the hundreds of thousands of families who have fled the country. The African Union is an organization devoted to encouraging peace, higher standards of living and human rights across the African continent. Currently, Burundi is a member, though their government is not following through on these ideals.

The African Union must use its influence to condemn the current actions of the the Burundi government and stop the violence and diaspora from that country.

Sign now to stand with hundreds of thousands of dispossessed Burundian refugees and the hundreds of thousands who remain in the country, either in hiding or living in perpetual fear of violence. By signing today you are lending your voice to stop the violence in that country.

To Idriss Deby, Chairperson of the African Union,

Right now, Burundi, a member nation of your union is going against the values nad agreements that your Union has worked hard to create.

In Burundi, there is a national crisis of government sanctioned violence, rape and torture. People are being forced to flee their homes into neighbouring nations who becoming overwhelmed with refugees.

Something must be done. As a major political player in Africa you have the ability to pressure the Burundian government towards peace and to stop this violent conflict that will only escalate if something is not done quickly.
