Protect Public Health - Demand Stronger Formaldehyde Protections from the EPA

  • by: Christopher Burley
  • recipient: Gina McCarthy, Administrator, Environmental Protection Agency

Formaldehyde is a poison. Furniture makers know it. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) knows it. And Hurricane Katrina survivors sickened by formaldehyde during their time in FEMA trailers know it.

Incredibly, some decision makers in Washington, DC, seem intent on delaying and weakening proposed standards that would protect you, your family, and your friends from the harmful effects of formaldehyde exposure.

Formaldehyde is used in the wood glue that many furniture manufacturers use. It’s also a known carcinogen whose fumes can cause burning eyes and asthma and other respiratory illnesses.

According to The New York Times, Senator David Vitter (R-LA), along with lobbyists from the furniture and chemical industry, has led a five-year campaign to slow and weaken standards that could limit our exposure to this poison — and it appears they may succeed.

Speak out for your health and your family's. Urge EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy to stand strong for tough new standards on formaldehyde use.

Dear Administrator McCarthy,

As someone concerned about public health and safety, I urge you to move quickly to adopt strong rules that limit consumers’ exposure to fumes from formaldehyde.

As you know, formaldehyde is a known carcinogen whose fumes can cause burning eyes and asthma and other respiratory illnesses.

The EPA’s delay in implementing rules to reduce exposure to these toxic fumes is unacceptable -- as are efforts to weaken formaldehyde rules to appease industry interests.
