I am heart-broken that Greg Abbott, the governor of my Texas birthplace, has forgotten that "Tejas" is Caddo for "Friend." He, along with 30 other governors, is abandoning hospitality and giving into Daesh (ISIS) by rejecting the Syrian refugees.
But even though over half our governors have said their states will not accept Daesh's resettled victims, I am still proud to be an American. I know that millions of us will stand together for what's right, and in the end, the values of compassion, inclusion, and justice will carry the day.
The good news is that these 31 governors have no authority to stop refugees. The bad news is that they can still slow the federal government down.
